يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ العَينَ دَاعِية الهَوَى
وَلو صَحَّ ذا ما كانَت النَّفسُ تَعشَقُ
They say that the eye invites desire,
And if that were true, the soul would not fall in love.
فُؤَادُ الفَتَى لا عَينُهُ يُوجِبُ الهَوَى
فَرُؤيَتُهُ مِن رُؤيَةِ العَينِ أصدَقُ
The heart of a young man, not his eye, causes love.
Seeing with the heart is truer than seeing with the eye.
وَليسَ بُكَاءُ العَينِ حُبًّا وَإنَّمَا
لإشفَاقِهَا لِلقَلبِ تَبكِي وَتُشفِقُ
The eye's tears are not love; rather,
It cries and grieves for the heart's sake.
