ضِ على مِقدار فَهمي

Alone there, left to myself,

فدعَوا بي ثم قالوا
علمٌ في كل عِلم
Then they sent for me and said,

عَرَّضوني لِلبَلايا
أَتَلَقّى كلَّ سَهم
They exposed me to afflictions;
They exposed me to calamities,
I receive every arrow.

يا لقومي أَتبعوا في
قَصدهم روحي وَجِسمي
Alas for my people! They pursued, in
O my kinsmen, help! — they have driven, in
their designs, my soul and my body.
