ما بال جيراننا بالبان
مالوا عن الود والحب
Why have our neighbors turned away
From affection and kindness?
وصبروا حظنا الهجران
منهم وما ثم من ذنب
They've resigned me to estrangement
Though I've done them no wrong.
أصبحت من بعدهم ولهان
متيم الجسم والقلب
After them I'm left distraught,
My heart and body yearning.
تجري دموعي على الأوجان
كأنها ما طر السحب
My tears flow down my cheeks
As if poured from the clouds above.
يا سعد ما كان في ظني
أن الأحبة والجيران
O Saad, never did I think
That my loved ones and neighbors
بعد اللقا يعرضوا عني
ويتركوني كذا حيران
After our meeting would shun me
And leave me bewildered like this.
فقل لهم يا أخا اليمن
أين المواثيق والأيمان
Tell them, O brother of Yemen,
Where are the pacts and covenants?
وأين عهد لنا قد كان
بالسفح من جانب الشعب
Where is the promise that was
By the hillside near the ravine?
سقيا لأيامنا اللاتي
مرت لنا بالحمى المأنوس
We quenched the days that passed,
The familiar fevered days,
كانت بها كل لذاتي
في عالم الروح والمحسوس
In which all my pleasures were
In the world of soul and senses.
لولا الترجي لما يأتي
من نفحة الملك القدوس
If not for hope of relief
From the Blessed King's breath,
لمزقت قلبي الأحزان
وذبت من شدة الكرب
My sorrows would have torn apart
My heart from the grip of grief.
عش بالرجا والأمل يا صاح
وحسن الظن بالمعبود
Live with hope and expectation, O friend,
Think well of the Worshipped One,
وروح وقتك بالأرواح
فإنه الأصل والمقصود
Spend your time with the spirits,
For He is the origin and purpose.
ولا تعزل على الجثمان
وإنما هو للترب
Do not cut yourself off from the flesh,
It only returns to dust.
فهل ترى يسعد الدهر
من بعد التفرق والبين
Will you ever see happiness again
After this separation and distance,
من قبل أن ينقضي العمر
بملتقى قرة العين
Before our lives run out,
With a joyous meeting of the eyes?
ويدنو الركن والحجر
من منتهى الحسن والزين
Will the pillar and stone
Ever draw near perfect beauty?
وبالمعروف من نعمان
مواقف الفوز والقرب
And with goodness from the Eternal
Are stations of success and nearness.
