A captive of sins, I stand at Your door,
Trembling at what lies within me, which You know.
He fears sins whose hidden depths were never hidden from You,
Yet hopes in You concerning them—hopeful and afraid.
Who but You is there to be hoped in—and feared?
None can oppose the bounty of Your judgment.
O my Lord, do not disgrace me in my record
When, on the Day of Reckoning, the records are spread open.
Be my companion in the darkness of the grave, when
Those dear to me turn away and the familiar friend shuns me.
If Your vast forgiveness should prove too narrow for me—the forgiveness
I hope for despite my excess—then surely I am lost.
