قليل لها هجر الجنوب المضاجعا

وصب عيون الصب فيها المدامعا

Little does she care that my heart is broken

And that my tears have soaked my pillow

وكثرة من يدعى على كبد يداً

وينشد قلبا بين جنبيه ضايعا

Many blame her unjustly

And search their hearts in bewilderment

لقد كان لي في رد قلبي حيلة

ولكن نضت سيفا من الجفن قاطعا

I almost regained my heart

But she unsheathed a glance like a cutting sword

واصمت بلحظ ما برحن قسيه

باسهمها فينا روام نوازعا

Her cruel glances stilled me

Looking like thunderbolts as they flashed

وقدّ إذا هزته نادى على القنا

رعي لي في يوم الطعان الوقائعا

And if agitated will cry for vengeance

Aid me against the attacks of the slanderers

إذا ما تثنى قالت الريح ما بقي

يميل معي غصن ويهتز طائعا

If she were to pass, the wind would say none remain

To sway with me, compliant branch

وتبسم عن در تساقط مثله

حديثا حلت بالدر منه المسامعا

Her smile shone like falling pearls

As melodies descended filling ears

تخال ثناياها على بعد دارها

إذا بتسمت ليلا بروقا لوامعا

I imagine her dimples from afar in her abode

Like twinkling stars lighting the darkness

بدت بين أتراب لها تشبه الدما

يجررن من خلف الذيول المقانعا

She appeared among ladies resembling blood

Dragging trains behind concealing veils

وقال لبعض بعضهن كذا بنا

نجرب أي اللحظ أمضى مقاطعا

One said to another, "Let's try which glance

Is sharper and cuts more keenly."

رمين فثبت في الفؤاد ولم تضع

سلاحي يدي حتى كشفن البراقعا

They glanced and lodged in my heart, not letting

My weapons rest until unveiling their face-covers

ولاحت وجوه في شعور تخالها

بدور سماء في ليال طوالعا

Faces shone in disheveled locks like

Rising moons on prolonged nights

هنالك يمسى المرء في قبضة الهوى

ويصبح فيه للعذارين خالعا

A man becomes enthralled by passion

Bewitched by the virgins' allure

ويزهد في قلب تقسمن لبه

وما خلت منهوبا تقسم راجعا

And spurns the hearts they pledged

Never sated, they pledge again

إلى الله من واش إلي محدق

وخل نفي نومي وقد بات هاجعا

To God I complain of a devoted

Lover disturbing my sleep and repose

فهذا كأعمالي يبيت ملازما

وهذا كآمالي يظل مدافعا

Like my deeds he clings all night

And like my dreams he persists

ولي أمل في أحمد آن وقته

وأوشك أن يرضى نداه المطامعا

I hope that Ahmed will soon

Fulfill my ambitions

ووعد إذا ما لحن وهنا بروقة

أتاك مع الاصباح سحبا هوامعا

He promised that if destiny ever frowned

At dawn he'd bring glittering hopes

إذا أوعد الجاني فصدق بخلفه

وكن بوفاه في المواعيد قاطعا

When a lover promises and breaks it

Be forgiving for oaths taken rashly

وما الناصر ابن الاشرف الملك امرء

عن الكل مما عز بالبعض قانعا

Al Nasser son of Al Ashraf the King

Is content with some not all

ولكنه لو حاول النجم خلته

بهمته العليا إلى النجم طالعا

If a star sought his alliance

He'd rise to meet the star

تساعده الاقدار فيما يريده

ومن صد جهلا عنه ردته خاضعا

Destiny aids his every desire

And forces dissenters to yield

كان له عزمه خلف من نأى

سلاسل تثنى جيده وجوامعا

His determination awed those distant

Bending necks and bringing down fortresses

فما رام امرا لا يظن وقوعه

لبعد المدا رأيناه واقعا

He never intended what seemed impossible

We saw the far-fetched transpire

فيا هاربا عنه رويدا فعزمه

كظلك أني سرت سار متابعا

You who flee him, wait, his resolve

Follows you as your shadow does

فطر في السما أوقع فلابد أن ترى

بكفيه إما كارها أو مطاوعا

Soar or stay still it will come to be

Whether you obey or balk

ومن فر قبل الليل ادركه المسا

سواء تباطئ سيره أو تسارعا

Struggle alone and leave us be

As you stay up while others sleep

تجاهد في البارى بنفسك دوننا

وتسهر ليلا دون من بات هاجعا

You tire for what gives rest to all

Moving while others halt

وتتعب فيما يستريح به الورى

وتسرى فما يمسى كغيرك رادعا

Strange that you summoned Ja'far

Then returned leaving your flock untended

تعجب غر حيث يممت جعفرا

وعدت ولم تترك رباه بلاقعا

Ja'far did no wrong, he stretched his hand

And pledged with no contention from you

وجعفر لم يذنب ومذ مد كفه

وبايع لم يصبح لها منك نازعا

You called and he obeyed willingly with his men

Preoccupied, he missed your summons

دعوت فلبي طائعا برجاله

وكان له عذر عن الوصل مانعا

His only fault was cowardice

A malady without remedy

وليس له عذر سوى الجبن وحده

وذلك داء لا دواً منه نافعا

As you approached, his fear grew

That old sickness flared anew

فلما دنوتم نحوه ازداد خوفه

وعاود سُما ذلك السقم ناقعا

You came to calm his heart

But he fled faster than thought

ويوم إليه كي تقر فؤاده

فطار مطارا لم يكن منه واقعاً

He pleaded the covenant you knew

Yours was no fleeting pledge

واقبل يستدعي بعهد عرفته

وما كان عهد منك في الناس ضائعا

Take me if you must by right

Spare me though I'm innocent

وقال خذوني ان أخذتم بحجة

وإن لم يكن ذنب فراعوا الشرائعا

Seeing he spared himself

Not deceiving or groveling

ولما رأيت المرء قد صان نفسه

وأكرمها عن أن يكون مخادعا

I granted him what I held

He lived though readied for death

وهبت له من نفسه ما ملكته

فحى وقد مد اليدين ونازعا

I do not interpret blood lightly

If no clear text allows breach

وما كنت في سفك الدما متأولا

إذا لم تجد نصا على الحل قاطعا

I ruled and did no wrong

Those trusts are safe by God's grace

ملكت ولم تاثم وكانت ودائع

فصنت بحمد الله تلك الودائعا
