    O oryx-eyed one, turn your arrows away from my throat;

I have no patience against the volleys of glances.

Spare the heart of the love-besotted lover,

for the magic within those eyelids has terrified it.

She shot me with her eyes and did not miss the death-blow,

though I had taken no precautions against her glances.

loss comes to a man from where he does not know.

Silently, for fear of tale-bearers, I converse with her

by lowering an eyelid and casting a sidelong glance.

She dealt truly with me in love, as I with her,

and we trafficked neither in delusion nor betrayal.

For one like her, even the sober-minded yearns passionately,

and every rugged ascent grows easy for the rider.

we have been burdened with more estrangement than we can bear.

To God I complain: there is an anguish in the heart

that turns the lover's innards upon the coals,

and eyelids that have held themselves aloof from sleep,

meeting only over a flowing tear.

spend it companioning the stars until dawn.

I keep my eyes ever estranged from sleep,

and wonder whether any way remains to the dream-phantom.

I drank passion until I was drunk, and then

the distance of the one I love added drunkenness to drunkenness.

Passion wore me thin, and parting uprooted my eyes,

until I lay cast down, with neither course nor command.

like a vindictive foe who sleeps with no blood-debt unavenged.

It lavishes injustice upon me—and injustice has its reign—

whose very memory the slayer of oppression and brooding care erased:

the imam of guidance, the victorious king, he

by whose swords conquest and victory stretched forth their hand.

Vicegerent of the Lord of all worlds over humankind,

and His deputy over creation in benefit and harm.

As a youth he strove toward glory with the striving of elders,

though he was but five beyond ten.

    His might is feared, and his favors are hoped for;

in his hand, as he wills, lie benefit and harm.

When Time's face blackens, his face shines,

and he is our help against Time's assaults.

and brought the skittish heights of glory back to their nest,

who defeated enemies when they were massed armies

and made the enemy's hosts seem few in the hour of rout.

And who are Antarah al-Absi and Amr beside him in the charge?

    You outstrip all others toward every goal;

what are scant pools of water beside the surging sea?

your boast is in slaughtering thousands of Tatars.

the flourishing homesteads and the barren waste alike.

No town has won your love above another,

nor have you singled out one land over another for rain.

even the mountains, engulfed by it, swim in a sea.

Through him we have gained from our age all that we desired,

blessings that have healed the maladies of the breast.

So we say, “Praise be to God,” forever,

yet cannot render the thanks and praise that are due.
