1. في كل يوم عارض لك يمطر

    حظ العدا منه النجيع الاحمر

    Every day an enemy rains misfortune on you

    The red lightning contains white light and roaring thunder

  2. البرق فيه البيض والرعد الوغا

    وسحاب وابله العجاج الأكدر

    Clouds pouring down turbulent dark rain

    It rained and irrigated the land of the donkeys with its clouds

  3. هطلت وروت أرض حمير سحبه

    فكأنهم لما عصوك استمطروا

    As if when they disobeyed you, they summoned the rain

    You had prayed against them, knowing they had

  4. ولقد دعوت بهم لعلمك أنهم

    ألقوا بأيديهم وهم لم يشعروا

    Thrown themselves in unknowingly

    You warned them one day when they saw the likes of it

  5. أنذرتهم يوما رأوا أمثاله

    في غيرهم لو كان فيهم مبصر

    In others - if only they had insight

    But fate blinds if it influences

  6. لكنها الأقدار تعمى إن جرت

    طرف البصير ويغفل المتذكر

    The sighted and the remembering becomes oblivious

    The donkeys thought the matter easy

  7. كانت تظن الأمر سهلا حمير

    حتى رأوك فهالهم ما أبصروا

    Until they saw you and were awed by what they witnessed

    You poured arrows and spears on them

  8. سالت عليهم بالصوارم والقنا

    تلك الأكام وقام فيها العبثر

    Creating settlements and chaos ensued

    They saw unbearable things so they wailed

  9. ورأوا أموراً لا تطاق فهللوا

    من هولها لما رأوك وكبروا

    When they saw and feared you

    And surrendered to death - some were hamstrung

  10. واستسلموا للموت هذا واقع

    عقرت قوائمه وهذا يعقر

    Others disemboweled

    Your spears and swords took turns among them

  11. وتعاقبت فيهم رماحك والضبا

    هاذيك تنظمهم وهذى تنثر

    Some arranging them in rows, others scattering them

    The living prostrated whenever your blades reached them

  12. والهام تسجد كلما صلت بها

    وركعن بيضك والخدود تعفر

    Bowing down to your white swords as their cheeks bled

    The leader of the living escaped from them, naked

  13. ونحا إمام البيض منهم من نجا

    عريان ينذر قومه ويحذر

    Warning his people, cautioning them

    Until the sword fulfilled its victory among them

  14. حتى إذا ما السيف قضى نحبه

    منهم دعاهم وهو منهم يقطر

    He called them as he dripped with their blood

    Whoever was arrogant because of the security of his fortress

  15. من كان مغرور بمنعة حصنه

    فلشدما اغترت بذلك حمير

    Those donkeys were certainly deluded by that

    So go to the yellow sands and deprive them of sustenance

  16. فاقبل على الصفراء واقطع حظها

    عنا وفي الخضراء أنت مخير

    You have free reign over the green

    The green will inevitably die tomorrow

  17. لا بد للخضرا غدا من مصرع

    ترد الظبا فيه الرقاب وتصدر

    Returning throats and chests pierced

    If the stoning does not annihilate it, it is a flask

  18. ان لم يفلها الرمج فهي زجاجة

    في الجو يدنيها السعود فتكسر

    In the air, arrows will approach and shatter it

    Count and reduce whatever you can - its lifespan

  19. عدد وقلل ما ستطعت فعمرها

    مما تعدد يا حبيشي أقصر

    Is shortened by your numbers, O Habashi

    Do not be fooled by the drowsy one feigning alertness

  20. لا تغترر بالغمض من مستيقظ

    وثباته وثباته لا ينكر

    His stillness is no proof

    Tears of fear flow down his face

  21. يندى فيقطر للحيا من وجهه

    ماء به نار الحروب تسعر

    Firing up the heat of wars

    So beware of him smiling, and increase his fear

  22. فاحذره مبتسما وزد من خوفه

    في الحرب وهو على العدا متنمر

    When warring while he is poised to attack the enemy

    The sword is feared when sheathed

  23. فالسيف يخشى حده في غمده

    وإذا تجرد فالمخافة أكثر

    And more so when unsheathed

    The pride of kings are the Prophet's descendants

  24. فخر الملوك بنو الرسول وأحمد

    لبنى الرسول وكل ملك مفخر

    For the Prophet's descendants every king feels pride

    The victorious king none above him

  25. الناصر الملك الذي ما فوقه

    في الملك إلا الواحد المتكبر

    In kingship but the Exalted Arrogant

    Whom none can count or limit, his pride

  26. من لا يعد ولا يحد فخاره

    والقطر إن عددته لا يحصر

    Is boundless as drops in a downpour

    O son of kings, though the stars of misfortune

  27. يا ابن الملوك الصيد إن كواكب ال

    غراء قد ظفرت بما لا يظفر

    Have gained what cannot be gained

    And through your fortune reached the love

  28. وتوصلت بالحظ منك إلى هوى

    ما كان قط على فؤاد يخطر

    That never crossed the heart

    To make Zubaid your confidante

  29. أن أصبحت لزبيد عندك ضرة

    فمن الضرائر عادة لا تؤثر

    A habit does not entail repetition

    So swear, if to Zubaid you allot a fair share

  30. فاقسم إذا لزبيد قسمة منصف

    إن كنت معها وحدها لا تصبر

    Being with her alone you cannot endure

    It is right that for her every day

  31. والحق ان تقضى لها عن كل يو

    م سنة وبكل شهر أشهر

    You allot a year, and each month many months

    Zubaid never expected that she would

  32. ما كان ظن زبيد فيك بأنها

    تمسى لديك بضرة تتضرر

    Become to you a confidante to be harmed

    You turned away, replacing connecting with her

  33. أعرضت عنها واستعضت بوصلها

    أخرى وما كل الأحبة تهجر

    With another - not all loved ones are abandoned

    And her family, individuals found in her

  34. وبأهلها من فرد وجد ما بها

    فلهم عيون بعدكم لا تنظر

    Eyes after you that do not look

    You are the cure - and what more precious cure

  35. انت الشفاء وهل أعز من الشفا

    عند السقيم وأنت روح آخر

    To the ill? You are another soul
