إذا اومض البرق من أرضها

يخيل لي أنها تبسم

When lightning flashes from her land

I imagine she smiles

وأذكرها في المحل الجذيب

فيخصبه دمعي المسجم

And I remember her in the alluring place

My streaming tears make it fertile

يروق لعيني جنا خدها

ويعجبني طرفها الأحوم

My eyes enjoy the garden of her cheek

And I like her languid glance

تجور على الصب في حكمها

عليه فيرضى بما تحكم

She acts unjustly toward the lover in her rule

And he accepts whatever she rules

جرى دمعها يوم ودعتها

كدر على خدها ينظم

Her tears flowed the day she bid me farewell

Trickling down her cheek rhythmically

وروعها البين لما أتى

على غفلة وهي لا تعلم

Separation startled her when it came

Unexpectedly while she was unaware

وقالت اتتركني هكذا

وتذهب والله ما ترحم

She said, "Will you leave me like this

And go away while having no mercy?"

ففاضت دموعي على وجنتي

وأبديت للبين ما اكتم

My tears streamed down my cheeks

Revealing to separation what I conceal

وقلت إلى الله أشكو الهوى

كلانا قتيل الهوى مغرم

And I said, "To God I complain of passion’s woe

We both are passion's captivated victims"

فولت تسارقني لحظها

وتومي إليَّ بما أفهم

She glanced at me for a moment

Hinting with what I understand

وترمي باسمهم إلحاظها

فوأدي ويا حبذا الأسهم

And shot me with her eyelashes

My wishes, if only arrows could be shot

فها أنا ذا منذ فارقتها

أليم جريح الحشا مولم

So here I am since I left her

A suffering, wounded, hopeless lover

ونومي حرام وكل امرئ

به لوعة نومه يحرم

My sleep is forbidden and everyone

Is forbidden the sleep he desires

أحبابنا ضقت ذرعا بكم

نأيتم ولا صبر لي عنكم

My loved ones, I'm utterly fed up with you

You left and I have no patience without you

وكان كنت ممن يطيع الهوى

ويعرف ما الحب لولاكم

If it weren't for you I'd be one who obeys desire

And knows what love is
