1. العلمُ بالإِجماع معدنه ذهب

    فبأي وجه يقتني أو يكتسبْ

    Knowledge through consensus is a mine of gold

    How then can it be acquired or bought?

  2. ذهب المؤلف شت جمع فنونه

    فليبك مطلبه العظيم ذوو الطلب

    The author's collected works were lost

    So let the seeker of this great pursuit weep

  3. والدينّ أظلم في عيون رجاله

    من بعد فقد سراجه وبه غرب

    And the religion has become darker in the eyes of its men

    After losing its lamp and it has set

  4. وبكلِّ جارحةٍ عليه جراحةٍ

    وبكل قلب منه صدع ما اشتعب

    And every limb has a wound upon it

    And every heart among them a cracked cleft

  5. أسف نقول مضى فيقبل مسرعا

    فيه فيا لهفاه ثم ويا تعب

    Alas we say he passed away swiftly accepting

    So passionate was he and oh the exhaustion

  6. تتجددُ الحسراتُ فيه دائماً

    أبدا خصوصا والتلهف والوصب

    Sorrows are renewed in him constantly

    Forever especially the fervor and melting

  7. ويصبُّ من سحب الشئون مجلجل

    صبا ملث المزن سخ المنسكب

    And from the clouds of affairs pours roiling

    A downpour that inundates the overflowing

  8. لرزيةٍ عظمت فحسبك ما يرى

    بالكون منها قد تروع واضطرب

    Due to a tragedy that terrified the universe

    It was perplexed and shaken by it

  9. ما إن قرى علم وأقرى نازل

    ودعاه ذو حاج فبلَغَ ما طلب

    Whenever he taught knowledge and enlightened

    And the needy called him he reached what was sought

  10. وكذاك إِن عقد الحبا في مجلس

    فالطيشُ معقود النواصي والعذب

    And likewise when he penned epistles in a gathering

    He let loose the reins and the sweetest draught

  11. وترددُ العلماء في المفهوم والمن

    طوق من علمِ الشريعةِ والأدب

    And the scholars hesitated on meanings and implications

    A circlet of religious knowledge and refinement

  12. وبدالهم ما عنه باعهم القصير

    فمن يحلُّ المشكل المبدي الصعب

    And in place of them what their brief lives sold them

    So who will solve the complex intractable dilemma?

  13. ورست بهم أمواجٍ بحر علومه

    كيف التخلصُ والوقوع على الأدب

    And the waves of its sciences have carried them away

    How to break free and attain propriety?

  14. ألاجري دمع عليه حسرةً

    بدم وأعقبه التلوه والكرب

    Should I not shed tears of regret for him

    With blood as sequel to melting and sorrow?

  15. فالفضلُ فيه خليقة من أصلِ

    خليقته الكريمةِ ليس فيه بمجتلب

    For the excellence in him belonged to the origin

    Of his noble nature, not something borrowed

  16. لا لومَ إن لبست عليه مسوحها

    جزعاً تصانيفٌ له ثم الخُطب

    Do not blame if his compositions donned

    In grief treatises then homilies

  17. ومحافلٌ كانت تضيء بوجهه

    الميمون فهي اليوم حقا تجتنب

    And gatherings that his auspicious face lit up

    Now truly avoid him

  18. ومجالس للطالبين العلم خ

    ير مجالس للعلم طراً والطلب

    And assemblies for seekers of science most benevolent gatherings for science and requests

    By my father may you live long, O noble one

  19. بأبي محياكض الكريمَ وطلعة

    قد غيبت بين الجنادِل والتُّرب

    You were concealed between shrouds and soil

    It was not imagined that the sea could

  20. ما كان في الآمال أن البحر في

    جدثٍ يغيضٍ وإن هذا للعجب

    Be contained in a pot, what a marvel!

    No, neither in fancy nor sensed or rationally conceived

  21. كلاَّ ولا في الظنِّ والمحسوس والمع

    قول يوماً ظنَّ ذلك أو حسب

    Did anyone ever imagine or reckon that

    I am like describing his attributes so we say then

  22. إِني كمثلِ صفاته فنقول ثم

    نقيس فيه بمن مضى أو من نجب

    Measure him by one past or one eminent

    That perfection, its traits are perfect

  23. إن الكمالَ خصاله وكمالها

    بكمالها وهو الأجلُّ المنتخب

    In its perfection, and it is most select

    The scholar perspicacious, the fathomless ocean

  24. العالمَ الوضَاحُ والبحر العبا

    ب الزاخرُ الأمواج والغذق الصبب

    Teeming with waves and most eloquent

    The outstanding among scholars and meritorious

  25. والفذُّ في العلماء والفضلاء في

    تصوير مسألة تلفّظ أو كَتَب

    In depicting an issue, reciting or writing

    The devout worshipper, bestower and desirer

  26. الناسك الأواب والوهاب والرغاب

    في بذل الرغائب والقرب

    Of granting wishes and drawing near

    Of keen intellect whatever knotty problem he probed

  27. ذو فطنة ما حاولت مستعصب المرقا

    إذا إلا ألانت ذا الصعب

    It invariably yielded to him however stubborn

    The world never showed any delight

  28. ما أبدت الدنيا لشخص نعمة

    ومسرة إلا وكان لها السبب

    Or joy to a person except he was the cause

    Our sheikh in every science we are

  29. يا شيخنَا في كلِّ علم إِننا

    منك التَلامذة اليتامي في وصَب

    Your bereft students in grief and in pain

    Lost today, weeping and complaining

  30. الضايعون اليوم والباكون والش

    كون من أخَذ لشخصك مغتصب

    For the usurpation of your person

    And for loss of your years what an affliction

  31. وبنا لفقد سناك آي مصيبة

    من دونها كل المصائب والعطب

    Beyond which all afflictions are defective

    Profound the calamity, so much so that we

  32. عظمَ المصابُ وجلَّ حتى أننا

    نجد الحياة لفقد وجهك لا تحب

    Find life without your face undesirable

    That we weep for you is obligatory

  33. إن البكا منا عليك لواجبٌ

    وعلى سواك بغير ندب مستحب

    And for other than you undeservedly supererogatory

    You are the most cherished of souls among us so never

  34. أنت الخليل لأنفس منا فما اشت

    قت وحقك سيبويه زمان هب

    Did they yearn like you, O Sibawayh of your time

    It has been related in some narration that

  35. قد جاء في بعض الرواية أنه

    في سالف الاعصارِ مما قد ذهب

    In bygone eras, as told of yore

    They weighed the blood of martyrs against the ink

  36. وزنوا دم الشهداء بمد محابر

    العلما فكان الحبر أرجح إذ رسب

    Of scholars' pens, and the ink outweighed when balanced

    This by way of showing superiority not majority

  37. ذا من طريق الأَفضلية لا طريق

    الأكثرية والتغالي في الرتب

    And exaggeration in ranks

    To God belongs what He gave and originated His making

  38. لله ما أعطى وأنشا صنعه

    فيما أراد وما أبادَ وما وهب

    In what He willed, and what He destroyed and bestowed

    His decree and command cannot be overcome

  39. ما إِن يغالب أو يدافع حكمه

    أو أمره وله التطولُ والغلب

    Or opposed, and to Him belong might and dominance

    Praise be to God who decreed death among us

  40. الحمد لله لاذي فينا أَسنَ

    الموت حتماً في الإعاجِم والعرب

    Inevitably upon non-Arabs and Arabs alike

    And it befell him by destiny until

  41. وجرى به المقدرو حتى أَنَّ كلَ

    الخلق في المحتوم أبناءٌ لأب

    All of creation in the ordained are sons of one father

    And in Ahmad the Chosen one there is an example

  42. وبأحمد المختار فيه أسوةٌ

    فالحرُّ من فيه تأسّى واحتسب

    So the free are those who in him found solace and acceptance

    O Lord a servant has called on You hopefully

  43. يا ربِّ عبد قد دعاك معولاً

    فاحسن لديك بدوه والمنقلب

    So treat him well in Your presence when he turns to You

    And bestow prayers and blessings upon the Prophet

  44. وعلى النبي فصلِّ وارض عن الكرا

    م ذوي الأهولة والقرابة والصحب

    And be pleased with the generous, kindred and companions
