1. خطرت بقدٍّ أهيفٍ ميّاسِ

    كالشمسِ قابضةً حميا الكاسِ

    With a supple, slender figure she sways

    Like the sun, cupbearer of the goblet

  2. خودٌ إذا عبث النسيم بقدّها

    تصمي القلوب بطرفها النّعاسِ

    When the breeze plays with her braids

    She captivates hearts with her sleepy eyes

  3. حوريةُ الوجناتِ نورُ جبينها

    يغني عن المصباح والمقياسِ

    The beauty of the gardens, the light of her brow

    Makes lamp and wick unnecessary

  4. تجفو المحبَّ وقد جفا في حبها

    طيبُ الكرى وتجود بعد شِماسِ

    She is cold to her lover though he loves her

    The fragrance of musk still generous after neglect

  5. وتريك أُنساً ثم تنفر تارةً

    وكذلك يفعل ظبيُّ كل كناسَ

    She gives you intimacy then spurns you at times

    Like the roebuck, coy with every flirt

  6. أَنفقتَ كنز تصبّري في حبها

    وهجرت من شغفي بها جلاّسي

    You spent your stock of patience in loving her

    And forsaking my passion for her, my friends

  7. حتى خفيتُ من الضنى عمن يرى

    شخصي وكم جهد المحب يقاسي

    Until from pining for her, those who saw me

    Could not recognize me - how the lover suffers!

  8. فلئن ذهبتُ من الزمان بحبها

    وبعدت عن وطني وجل أناسي

    So if I'm taken by time through love of her

    And distance myself from my country and people

  9. فلأشكها عند المليك الطاهر

    ابن الأشرف بن الأفضل العباسي

    Then I will complain of her to the immaculate King

    Son of the Most Virtuous, the Abbasid

  10. الأوحد السلطان أكرمُ من سما

    بشجاعةٍ ومهابةٍ وبباسٍ

    The peerless Sultan, more generous than heaven

    With valor, awe, and power

  11. ذو رفعةٍ وشهامةٍ ووجاهةٍ

    وفصاحةٍ وبلاغةٍ ومراسِ

    Of eminent station, pride, and distinction

    Eloquence, rhetoric, and uprightness

  12. ومكارمٍ غرٍّ وفضل باهر

    ومناقبٍ طابت لطيبِ أَساس

    And noble deeds, abundant merit, and brilliance

    And virtues built on excellent foundations

  13. وعلا على رجل علت ومفاخر

    أضحت مطهرةً من الأدناس

    He rose above the best of men and their glories

    Purified of all blemish and baseness

  14. ويدٌ تفوقُ على الغمام ولم تزلْ

    بالخيرِ من عدم النوال تواسي

    His hand surpasses the clouds, and has never ceased

    To console the deprived of gifts with kindness

  15. أضحى به اليمنُ السعيدُ مطهراً

    من رجَسِ كلِّ منافقٍ خنّاسِ

    Through him, fortunate Yemen was cleansed

    Of the taint of every despicable, slanderous hypocrite

  16. أنست مكارمه مكارم من مضى

    من نسل مروان أو العباس

    His generosity made forgotten the generosity of past

    Descendants of Marwan or Abbas

  17. أحيا البهائمَ والجبال بملكه

    بعد الجمودِ وخشية الإِدراسِ

    He brought the animals and mountains to life

    After stillness and fear of devastation

  18. غرسَ العلا فيها فأثمر غرسُه

    أكرمْ به من سيّد غَراسِّ

    He planted glory in them, and his planting

    Bore fruit, more generous than any master planter

  19. تغنيه هيبتهَ وشدةَ بأسهِ

    عن كثرة الحجّاب والحرّاسِ

    His formidable manner and might

    Make unnecessary many guards and attendants

  20. لو كانت الأملاك طراً مثلَه

    ما كان يوجد باخلٌ في الناسِ

    If all dominions were like him

    No poverty would exist among the people
