يا ليلُ جبلةَ هل لفجرك مطلعُ

هيهات قد ناديت من لا يسمعُ

O night of Jabalah, does your dawn have a rising?

Alas, I called out to one who does not hear!

يمشي الهوينى نحو جبلة صبحها

كرها وحين يسير عنها يسرعُ

The passionate one walks toward the dawn of Jabalah,

Reluctantly, and when he walks away from it, he hastens.

ويقيم فيها ساعة متلفتاً

ويغيب باقي دهره لا يرجعُ

He stays there an hour, looking around,

Then is absent for the rest of his life, never to return.

لا تنكرنَّ عليه قطع وصالها

فوصال أرض مثل جبلة يقطعَ

Do not blame him for cutting off his visit with her,

For even a connection to a land like Jabalah may be cut off.

وإذا تهامي تشكى ضيعة

بتعز فهو بأرض جبلة أضيعُ

And if she complains of abandonment in anguish,

He is more lost in the land of Jabalah.
