1. يا غنيا بفخر ملك الأنام

    عن قواف ملفقات الكلام

    O you who take pride in being king of all people

    Keep away from patched up, fabricated words

  2. لست بالشعر ساميا إنما الشعر

    وأربابه بمدحك سامي

    It is not poetry that is sublime, but rather poetry

    And its masters are made sublime through praising you

  3. أصقع الناس شاعر منَّ بالش

    عر عليكم ورام كل مرام

    People deafened a poet with poetry about you

    And sought every purpose

  4. إنما المن للمليك علينا

    إن مدحناه من غريب الكلام

    Indeed, the favor is for the king over us

    If we praise him with strange words

  5. قصرت همتي عن المدح فيه

    إن أقل جوده كفيض الغمام

    My ambition fell short of praising him

    Indeed, the least of his generosity is like pouring clouds

  6. أو اشبهه في الثبات بليث

    كنت قد جئت غاية في الملام

    Or likening his steadfastness to a lion

    I would have reached the epitome of blame

  7. إنما الأشرف بن عباس الملك

    حياة في هذه الاجسام

    Al-Ashraf ibn Abbas is indeed the king

    A life in these bodies

  8. أيها المالك الرقاب بإرث

    وبجود ومنصب وحسام

    O owner of necks through inheritance

    And generosity, position and sword

  9. إنني بعض من دعاه إليكم

    أمل صادق وبعد مرام

    I am one of those who calls out to you

    With sincere hope and after much purpose

  10. كلما رمت شرح حالي إليكم

    حرت بي الوقوف والإِقدام

    Whenever I attempted explaining my state to you

    I was confused whether to stop or move forward

  11. فرجاء يحثني من ورائي

    وجلال يقوم من قدامى

    A hope urging me from behind

    And majesty standing before me

  12. فاستمع شرح قصتي وأغثني

    يا غياث الورى وغوث الأنام

    So listen to the explanation of my story and help me

    O savior of all people and helper of mankind

  13. كنت بالربح والتجارة مغرى

    ترتمى بي إلى بعيد المرام

    I was tempted by profit and trade

    Taking me to far-off goals

  14. فغشيت البلاد برا وبحراً

    أطلب الربح قد شددت حزامي

    I traversed lands and seas

    Seeking profit, tightening my belt

  15. ثم لما جمعت ما يسر الله

    من المال بعد طول هيامي

    Then when Allah made easy what wealth He willed

    After my long confusion

  16. ساقني الله نحو ارض زبيد

    ودعتني كواذب الأوهام

    Allah led me to the land of Zabid

    And delusions of grandeur left me

  17. فأقامت تجارتي في كساد

    واستمرت في غرامتي في الغرام

    My trade fell into recession there

    And I continued in my infatuation with worries

  18. ما انقضى لي هناك حولان إلا

    وقد احترت في ارتياد الطعام

    Not a year passed there

    Except I was perplexed in obtaining food

  19. وقد أدَّنت فوق ألفين نقدا

    وإذا بالخصوم تبغى خصامى

    And I owed over two thousand cash

    And behold, opponents sought to oppose me

  20. جئتكم هاربا ففرجتم الكر

    ب وذدتم حوادث الأيام

    I came to you fleeing so you relieved the affliction

    And repelled the events of time

  21. واستقامت حالتي وزادت نمواً

    فلك الشكر يا شريف المقام

    My state was corrected and grew

    So thanks to you, O noble one

  22. ورجائي لديك أن تقضي الدين

    وأمسي خلوا من الإِهتمام

    And my hope in you is that you will pay off the debt

    And I spend my nights free of worries

  23. ان قلباً سكنته وهو قلبي

    ليس للاهتمام دار مقام

    If a heart you have settled, and it is my heart

    Has no place for worries to stay

  24. ان أهل الديون أضنوا فؤادي

    أكفنيهم كفيت يوم القيام

    If debtors have straitened my heart

    Save me from them, as you saved on Judgement Day

  25. اكفنيهم يمزجة من مداد

    فوق فصل بلفظة من كلام

    Save me from them with a line of ink

    Over a final sentence with some words
