If you are a water-bearer in robes
Of fine linen or silken cloaks,
Then give to drink the sons of Nahd when
They have sipped the choice of its alleys.
For the steeds know well how
To attack her at dawn after overtaking her,
With blue lances that have dyed red
The people at the height of her alleys,
Until you see the butts of the spears
And the whites in their necks.
