Truly, at al-Bayḍāʾ, on the edge of the protected pasture, there died
a young man who was the glory of cavalcades and drinking companions.
The wrongdoer would seek refuge in him, for fear of what he had done,
as the white-legged she-ibex sought refuge on the forbidding peak.
His cousins on his father’s and mother’s sides remain around him,
parched, never drinking their fill of cool, sweet water.
With their palms they heap earth upon him,
though it is from no hatred that dust is cast over him.
