1. How splendid is this leader’s resolve! For it has

    begun to tell Time’s own ambition: “Fall short!”

  2. He loves to handle affairs himself,

    and to inspect each matter with discerning scrutiny.

  3. He is not content with anyone else, relying upon

    a report; a man himself is the truest informant.

  4. His deeds are good through the goodness of his conscience;

    a deed is good when its source is good.

  5. By his justice, the vicissitudes of calamity were warded off,

    and reform became known after being unrecognized.

  6. The people’s joy appeared after its concealment,

    and security’s draught ran clear after being clouded.

  7. He devoted himself to equity in all that lies between us,

    and to justice between the greatest of us and the least.

  8. Through his good fortune, all mankind took the highway of the

    seekers of right guidance, and the path of the clear-sighted.

  9. High virtue spread among the people: they enjoined

    what is right, or one forbade a brother from what is wrong.
