كنتَ في مصرَ قوةً ذات بالٍ
فتصدت لها صروفُ الليالي
You were a formidable power in Egypt
But the passing nights opposed you
واستبدّت بنزعها من يديها
والليالي إذا عدَت لا تبالي
And began to strip that power from your hands
For passing nights do not care
قوة ما بدت على الطرس إلا
رفعتْ خاملاً وأزرت بعال
A power that did not appear on land but
Raised the defeated and equipped the unarmed
إن سقَيتَ الأقلام منها قليلاً
جاوزت في المضاء حدّ النصالِ
If you water pens with it a little
It surpasses the edge of swords in brightness
فهي عند اللجاج ملحٌ أجاج
وهي أحلى عند الرضا من زلال
So before persistence it is biting salt
And before acceptance, it is sweeter than fresh water
وهي يوم السلام مجّة نحلٍ
وهو يوم الصيال مجُّ صِلال
And on the day of peace it is a swarm of working bees
And on the day of war it is a swarm of hornets
صاغها ربُّها لتكوين رأي
من جميع القرى وتكوين مال
Its Lord created it to formulate opinion
From all towns and accumulate wealth
وسل الأحمرين منيةَ غمر
إذ تلظت ووفدَ قاني الهلال
The Red Sea was awed by its threat
When it blazed and the new crescent arrived
سحرُ هاروت إن تقِسْه عليها
فهي أبقى على عقول الرجال
If you compare Harut's sorcery to it
It is more lasting in men’s minds
عُطلّت فجأة وزالت كأن لم
تكُ بالأمسِ في ثباتِ الجبال
It was suddenly incapacitated and vanished as though
Yesterday it was not firmly rooted in the mountains
كيف خانتك يا عليَّ المنايا
واستطالت إليك أيدي الزوال
How did death betray you, O Ali
And the hands of evanescence reached out to you
أين ما يذكرونه من حذار
ودهاء وقدرة واحتيال
Where is what they mention of your caution
Shrewdness, ability and cunning?
بنت عنا وقد تركت فراغاً
هو حتى يشاء ربك خالِ
You built our glory but left an emptiness
Which will remain vacant until your Lord wills
فلمن تترك الصحافة فينا
وعلى من يكون فصلُ المقال
To whom do you leave journalism among us
And who will write the article?
من يهز النفوس مثلك شرقاً
وجنوباً لمغرب وشمالِ
Who would shake souls like you did in the East
South, West and North?
يا صديق الصبا وحافظَ عهدي
في مثاني تلك السنين الخوالي
O friend of my youth and keeper of my covenant
In the course of those fleeting years
هل نقضت العهد القديم وإلا
فلماذا سبقْتني بارتحالِ
Did you violate the old covenant or else
Why did you bid me farewell by departing?
دارُ شرٍ شددتَ رحلك منها
ليت شعري متى أشدّ رحالي
You hurried away from the abode of evil
I wonder when I will hurry away
فحياتي من بعد فقدْ لِداتي
كمُقامِ الغريبِ في غير آلِ
So after losing you, my life
Is like a stranger’s visit without kinfolk
صدق الله ربنا كل شيءٍ
هالكٌ غير وجهه ذي الجلالِ
God, our Lord spoke the truth, everything
Perishes except His glorious face
