1. شُقوا القلوبَ وغادروا الأطواقا

    وذروا الدموع تُقرّحُ الآماقا

    They broke hearts and left the circles

    And let tears that wound the depths flow

  2. ودعوا النفوس تصبُّها أجفانُكم

    دمعاً وتسكبها دماً مهراقا

    And let souls that your eyelids pour

    As tears and spill as blood gushing forth

  3. ذوبوا من الأحزان لا تبقوا على

    أكبادكم واستنفدوا الأرماقا

    Melt from sorrows, do not stay upon

    Your livers, and drain the veins

  4. خطب دوت في الخافقين رعودُه

    فزعاً وطبقّ نعيُه الآفاقا

    News rang out in the horizons, its thunder

    Terrifying, and its wailing filled the horizons

  5. غشى الأنامَ ولم يكن متوقعاً

    كالسحب صيفاً أرسلت إبراقا

    It overwhelmed people though unexpected

    Like summer clouds that poured forth lightning

  6. وأصمّت الأسماعُ رنة وقعه

    والحزن أولى الألسنَ استغلاقا

    And deafened ears the sound of its fall

    And sorrow made tongues most speechless

  7. ودجا الزّمان فكل نور حلْكةٌ

    ونبا المكان فكلّ رحب ضاقا

    And time was darkened, every light eclipsed

    And space wailed, every expanse narrowed

  8. هل تعلمون معمراً أو ناشئاً

    لم يُوله نبأ الردى تصعاقا

    Do you know one aged or youth

    Whom the news of demise did not shake

  9. هل تعلمون معمّراً أو ناشئاً

    لم يوسع الصبر الجميل طلاقا

    Do you know one aged or youth

    Whom beautiful patience did not overwhelm

  10. أيّ امرىء لم يسقِه يومُ النوى

    كأساً من الروع المرير دهاقا

    What man was there whom the day of sorrow

    Did not give a cup of bitter dread to drink

  11. لا كان يوم سار فيه نُعاته

    يُلثون في مهج الورى إحراقا

    It was not a day wherein his obituary

    Was ripped into the core of existence

  12. هي ساعة راش القضاءُ سهامهُ

    فيها وحلّ بنا البلاء وحاقا

    It is the hour when destiny shot its arrows

    And affliction befell us and took hold

  13. أودى فأي فريصة لم ترتعد

    أم أيّ قلب لم يكن خفاقا

    It felled—what prey did not tremble

    Or what heart was not pounding

  14. بدر عراه وهو في استقبالهِ

    خسف وصادف في الكمال محاقا

    The full moon uncovered—while facing it

    An eclipse occurred and perfection was marred

  15. حملته أعناق الرجال وطالما

    بنواله قد طوّق الأعناقا

    Men's necks carried him, and his sword belt

    Had often girded necks

  16. تركوه عمداً في الظلام ولم يكن

    يرضى الشموع لبيته إشراقا

    They left him intentionally in the dark, and he

    Would not be pleased by candles lighting his house

  17. إن فاق في المجد الكرام فأنه

    أربى عليهم في العلا إنفاقا

    If he surpassed the honorable in glory, then he

    Raised them to the highest generosity

  18. خُلق كما سرت الشمالُ ورِقةٌ

    تحكي الشمول لطافةً ومذاقا

    He was created as the north wind flowed, a leaf

    Telling of overarching kindness and taste

  19. وبديهة تقف الرويةُ دونها

    والسمع يُلقى عندها الأرواقا

    And intuition that the proficient stops before

    And hearing casts off its fetters before it

  20. وعبارة تشفى الغليل ومنطق

    بمجامع المعنى يحيط نطاقا

    And an expression that quenches anguish, and speech

    That encompasses the meaning’s spheres

  21. وتساؤل يذر المعمَّى واضحاً

    وطلاقةٌ تولى النهى إطلاقا

    And a question that shows the blind clearly

    And eloquence that sets prohibition free

  22. خفق السماع عليه حتى إنه

    لم يخش طالب جوده إخفاقا

    Hearing fluttered over him until he

    Feared no failure in seeking his generosity

  23. لا يرهب الإقلالَ بعد لقائهِ

    عافٍ ولا يتهيبُ الإملاقا

    He does not fear reduction after meeting him

    Healthy, nor avoidance of replenishment

  24. إن قيل عفوٌ فهو بحرٌ زاخر

    لا يعرف الجاني له أعماقا

    If it is said “pardon,” then he is a abundant sea

    That knows no depths for the sinner

  25. طبعت سجاياه عليه أما ترى

    في كلّ بادرة له مصداقا

    The lines of his character imprinted upon him—do you not see

    In each impulse of his, a confirmation

  26. أو قيل دين فهو حافظُ عهدهِ

    كم شدّ منه عرىً ومدّ رباقا

    Or if it is said “religion,” he upholds his covenant

    How often he held its reins taut or its straps slack

  27. أو قيل إصلاح فذلك صنعهُ

    في مصرَ أعتق أهلها إعتاقا

    Or if it is said “reform,” that is his making

    In Egypt, he freed its people from bondage

  28. لدغت أفاعي الحادثات يمينها

    دهراً فكان لسمها ترياقا

    The snakes of tribulations stung their right sides

    For ages, and he was the antidote to their venom

  29. رأب الصدوع بحكمة منه وقد

    ملئت طباقُ بلاد مصر شقاقا

    He mended rifts with wisdom, though

    The lands of Egypt had filled with schisms

  30. وأقر فيها العدل بعد تزعزع

    والحقّ أولى أمرهُ إحقاقا

    And he settled justice there after upheaval

    And truth is most deserving to be upheld

  31. ونعي الضلال فما تصدى باطلٌ

    إلا وأزهق روحهُ إزهاقا

    And he obliterated misguidance—so no falsehood opposed

    Without having its soul extinguished

  32. أولى المعارفُ في الديارِ عوارفا

    والعلمَ بعد ذبولهِ إيراقا

    He acquainted the abodes with noble character

    And revived knowledge after its withering

  33. مَهدَ الطريق لمن تقلد بعده

    وهدى السراةَ وفتَّح الأغلاقا

    He paved the path for those appointed after him

    And guided the travelers and unlocked obstacles

  34. فسَرو بنبراس الذكاء ليغمضوا

    ممن تطلع نحوها أحداقا

    That they might travel by the lantern of intelligence

    And shut from those whose eyes yearned towards it

  35. ما وفق الله امرءاً في أمة

    إلا وكان لنفعها مُنساقا

    God never enabled someone among a community

    Except that he was harnessed for its benefit

  36. تربت يمينُ الدهر غيّب في الثرى

    هذي الخصال ويِلكمُ الأخلاقُ

    The right hand of fate reaped—it buried

    In the soil these qualities, and so character perished

  37. سبق الكرام إلى النعيم وعهدُنا

    فيه لكلّ عظيمة سبّاقا

    The honorable preceded to bliss, and our era for

    Every great one was a precursor

  38. وسرى إلى الرب الرحيم ملاقياً

    بين الملائكة الكرام رفاقا

    And he went to the Merciful Lord, meeting

    Amidst the noble angels, companions

  39. عن فضلهِ حدّثْ فطيب حديثه

    يشفي المحب ويطرب المشتاقا

    Speak of his virtues—good is speaking of him

    That brings remedy to the loving and delight to the longing

  40. يا راحلاً عنا تركْت نفوسنا

    تشكو الأسى وتساور الأشواقا

    O you who departed from us leaving our souls

    To complain of sorrow and harbor passion

  41. لم يُبق منا الحزنُ إلا مهجةً

    حرَّي وإلا مدمعاً دَفاقا

    Grief left in us only a burning longing,

    And a flowing tear

  42. خطفتك خاطفةُ المنية فجأةً

    منا وغادرت الجسوم رقاقا

    Death’s terminator snatched you suddenly from us

    And left the bodies infirm

  43. لم تنتثر شهب السماء ولم يَطل

    مرضٌ ولم يُبد الغراب نُعاقا

    The comets of heaven did not scatter, nor did

    Illness appear, nor the crow give portent

  44. ويد الردى سرقتك ليلاّ ليتهم

    حدّوا بقطع يديهم السُّراقا

    And the hand of demise stole you by night—would that they

    Had cut the hands of thieves!

  45. إنّا على الود الذي مكّنته

    منا وعنه لا نحُولُ فُواق

    We shall not contravene the affection

    That you established with us or move past it

  46. لا كان من ينسى الولاء لراحل

    يوماً وينقض بَعده الميثاقا

    One could not be who forgets the loyalty

    Of the departed one day and breaks the pact
