Why did I believe her promises were mirages

That ignite hopes but cannot quench thirst?

She swore she'd keep in touch but wasn't true

As they claimed, nor did that rouged one uphold oaths.

Why should I excuse one true of promise, faithful,

Betrayed by her promises, a liar?

I love youth and passion, yet I see old age

Is reason behind passions, one reason of all.

How long will my loved ones persist abandoning me

While I cling to cord of love so feebly?

Her heart obeys the slanderers and lends an ear

To rebels, refusing all blame or accountability.

Why see I no lovers like myself brought down by love,

Although passion's sword spared not even the self-styled stoic?

I did not know that among the name of Love,

Before passion, dwells addled wits and shredded nerves.

Oh heart, enough! Her glance is a lioness

Or did you not see it still lurking in the thicket?

My youthful passion which flared nearly burned me

Had not my tears doused the flames.

    أرأيتُ سيفاً صاب جوفَ قرابِ

    The swords of her eyelids sheathe a tempered blade;

Have you seen a sword pierce to the core so able?

I died for her glances but she cared not a whit,

With no fault, like a slain stranger in the night.

She neither asked after nor sent a bouquet,

Never so much as bit her lip.

Sister of the new moon, is there no mercy in your heart

For your love-struck admirer so afflicted?

My beauty, grace one passion-maddened, his senses

Reeling, else you would own the finest portion.

With her coquetry, she steals my heart and soul

To her I am humbled, by her beauty led.

In her blossoming smile three beauties shine:

Pearls, and the moon, and parting veils.

Yet the wonder is, though for a time

Her lids seem closed, she sends forth glancing arrows.

And when her hair's dark night flows free, you see

In its waves a sunset glow.

Her waist bears more than it can support, and if

She speaks, you hear melody flow in her grammar.

    يا ردفها المهتز مالك رابي

    That slender waist, so proud, adds but to her grace;

Those shaking hips, ah, the promise they hold!

No doddering elder knew the sweetness of her spittle

Without returning to the days of his prime.

I swear by her excellent past, the key to the door

Of her mouth’s garden, not daughter of the vine.

I heard her glances burned whoever dared admire

Another’s beauty, so she came to test me.

Her threats poured from her cup in censure and blame

Though she claimed it was the wine’s bitter dregs.

O Hind, enough reproaching me, show mercy

On a soul heralding its own demise.

If I have turned to others, let my apology

Suffice; I await whatever punishment is my due.

She said, “But you have looked to others, entering

The house of idols by so many doors.”

“I will treat you harshly, sever ties

Of loyalty, deny you all I promised before.

With rejection I will burn you, with disdain consume you

And deprive you of all discourse.”

I swear by Him who placed all beauty

In you and made it dwell in greatest honor,

had I not urgent affairs in Egypt

I'd not have left your noble side.
