1. غيري إذا أغبرّ وجهُ الدهرِ يحذرُه

    وإن تغيَّرَ يعنيه تغيُّرهُ

    If time's face is stained, others fear it

    And if it changes, its change concerns them

  2. ما الدهرُ أمرٌ له بال فأرهبه

    مثلي إذا شاء ينهاهُ ويأمرهُ

    Time is not something I fear without cause

    I restrain and command it when I wish

  3. يقضي بما شاء لا أخشى عواقبهُ

    ولا يكدرني منه تكدرهُ

    I pass judgement as I please, heedless of consequences

    Neither its turbulence nor bitterness disturb me

  4. ولا إذا طرقتْ قلبي حوادثُه

    يهتز منهن أو يفنى تصبرهُ

    Nor when its events knock on my heart

    Does it shake or diminish its patience

  5. والحرّ كالتبر مهما كان موضعه

    فليس يصدأ بالأعراض جوهره

    The free man is like pure gold, no matter his status

    His essence cannot rust from disgrace

  6. ولا أرى في يسير العيش لي أربا

    إن كان يُقنع بعضَ القومِ أيسرهُ

    I see no profit in an easy life

    If it satisfies some, its least contents me

  7. رويدَ يا دهرُ حتى أجتنى ثمراً

    فإن عمري انقضى في الغرسِ أكثرهُ

    Slow down, oh time, so I may harvest fruit

    For most of my life passed sowing

  8. كن يا زمانُ على ما أشتهيهِ فلي

    فضلٌ ذوو الفضلِ تدريهِ وتقدرهُ

    Be, oh time, as I wish, so excelling

    I know and appreciate excellence

  9. تحلل السحر أقوالي وتعقدهُ

    وتنظم الدر أفكاري وتنثرهُ

    My words loosen magic and knot it

    Scattering then stringing pearls of thought

  10. إذا دعا الخطب واستدعى الخطاب فلا

    يدعو سواء لفصلِ الأمرِ منبرهُ

    When speeches call out and discourses summon

    His pulpit makes no distinction in resolving matters

  11. ولِي يراع كصدر الرمحِ هزّتهُ

    تبشر الكونَ أحياناً وتنذرهُ

    Like the breast of a lance it trembles

    Bringing tidings and warnings to creation

  12. له مواقع تندك العقول لها

    كأنما نفثات السحر أسطرهُ

    It unravels minds with its rhythms

    Like lines of spells cast over them

  13. يبدي غوامض سرٍ ما تأملهُ

    ذو الفكر إلاّ وأعياهُ تفكرهُ

    He who contemplates its profound mysteries

    Is exhausted by the effort of thought

  14. يرجى ثناهُ ويخشى هجوهُ أبداً

    ما دام معروفهُ يبدو ومنكرهُ

    Praise of it is hoped for, insult feared

    As long as its propriety and impropriety appear

  15. أثنى على المرء ما صحت خلائقهُ

    حتى إذا اعتل أهجوهُ وأهجرهُ

    I praised a man whose traits were sound

    Until he faltered, then censured and shunned him

  16. إني أجلّ لساني عن محاورة

    معْ غير عارفٍ مقداري وأكبرهُ

    I still my tongue from conversing

    With one ignorant of my status and greater

  17. وأستعيضُ يداً تغني إشارتها

    فإن بدا مشكل قامت تفسرهُ

    And substitute a hand whose motions suffice

    Should meaning be unclear, to explain

  18. وكم سرى ليَ ما بين الورى أدبٌ

    سناهُ يلحظهُ الأعمى وينظرهُ

    How much courtesy unknown between men

    The blind may observe and the sighted view

  19. والصم تصغي لقولي حين أنطقهُ

    وتفهم القصد منه حين أذكرهُ

    The deaf may listen when I speak it

    And grasp the intent when mentioned

  20. والأمر طوع يدي هذا أقدمه

    إلى المعالي وذا حيناً أؤخرهُ

    The matter complies with my hands

    Advancing now, delaying then

  21. حتى كأني سليمانُ الزمانِ فلا

    يردّ أمرٌ إلى من شئتِ أصدرهُ

    As if I were Solomon of my age

    No command rejected I wish to issue
