1. ريبُ المنونِ وصرفُ الدهرِ أعياني

    والدمعُ قرّح يومَ البينِ أعياني

    Death's whims and the turns of fate did weary me,

    And the parting's tear marked forever my weary eyes.

  2. إلامَ يا دهرُ لا تُبقي عليّ وكم

    تجني وما كنتُ يوماً قطّ بالجاني

    Why, oh fate, do you not leave me surviving, while so many

    Others you reap, though ne'er a wrong by me was done.

  3. وكم أضعتَ عهوداً كنتُ أحفظها

    وخنت مَن لم يكن يوماً يخوّانِ

    How many a pact you broke that I kept faithfully,

    Betraying one who ne'er betrayed or wronged a soul.

  4. روَعت قلبي وكم فرّقت مجتهداً

    بيني وبين أخِلائي وأخداني

    You tore my heart asunder and with might sundered

    Me from my brethren and the friends I have always known.

  5. وكم بغيتَ ولكن كنتُ مصطبراً

    وكان يحتمل البلواءَ جثماني

    Much did you wish, but I with patience bore it all

    And my body could endure the direst tribulation's squall.

  6. وكان عندي على هذا الأسى جلدٌ

    حتى تجاوزتَ في بغْيٍ وعدوانِ

    I had the fortitude to withstand this grief, until

    You crossed all limits in your transgression's free-for-all.

  7. حتى فتكت بمن عزّت مصيبته

    على النفوس وساءت كلَّ إنسانِ

    You cut down the one whose noble origin

    Through generations, back to Prophet and patriarchs ran.

  8. ذاك الشريف الذي تنمي عناصرهُ

    إلى النبي إلى فهرٍ وعدنانِ

    He of pure, immaculate lineage, his branches ever graced

    By precedence in wisdom, knowledge and eloquence outshone.

  9. ذاك الذي طاب أصلاً طاهراً وزكت

    فروعهُ ذاك سامي المجد والشانِ

    He who made a name of goodness for himself while here below,

    And attained amongst his peers a rank sublimely high.

  10. ذاك الذي أحرز اسماً في الورى حسناً

    وحاز قدراً عليًّا بين أقرانِ

    Valiant, with ambition for glory loftiest,

    His prestige soared to the summit of mighty Kailaan.

  11. شهمٌ له همةٌ في المجد عاليةٌ

    ورفعة قدرُها يزري بكيوانِ

    A raincloud, when the seekers gathered in his court,

    Raining generosity, quenching every thirsty one.

  12. غيثٌ إذا يمم الطلابُ ساحتهُ

    غيثُ من الجودِ يروي كل ظمآنِ

    Son of one whose virtues fame trumpeted far and wide,

    Distinguished by excellence in discernment and oratory.

  13. وهو ابنَ من عمّتِ الدنيا مناقبُهُ

    وامتاز بالسبق في فهمٍ وتبيانِ

    He who strove with diligence in every deed,

    Until he stood alone in knowledge and cognition.

  14. وهو الذي جدّ في الأعمال مجتهداً

    حتى تفرّد في علمٍ وعرفانِ

    No wonder! The cub takes after the lion in his ways,

    The horse resembles well the meadow in its flowers and herbs galore.

  15. لا غرو فالشبلُ مثل الليث في صفة

    والدوحُ كالروضِ في زهرٍ وأفنانِ

    The buds give forth the very water that the red rose renders,

    And the ocean occasionally casts up a pearl.

  16. والوردُ ينتج ماءً مثلهُ أرِجا

    والبحرُ يسمح أحياناً بمرجانِ

    If any claim to have attained his singular station,

    Let them come forth with proof, if proof they can bring forth.

  17. إن كان يزعم قومٌ أنهمُ وصلوا

    مقامهُ الفردَ فليأتوا ببرهانِ

    God's own full moon he was, dwelling in our hearts, but now

    Lies shrouded in his winding sheet, corpses cold among.

  18. لله بدر جلالٍ كان منزلهُ

    منا القلوبَ فأضحى طيَّ أكفانِ

    Gone he is, the universe weeps and mourns him

    With tears flowing like the torrents of storm-swollen streams.

  19. قد سار والكونُ يبكيهِ ويندبهُ

    بمدمعٍ مثلَ فيضِ المزنِ هتّانِ

    The fragrant garden of Paradise he makes for joyfully,

    To partake of its eternal bliss, with dark-eyed houris for company,

  20. ويمم الجنةَ الفيحاءَ مغتبقاً

    كأسَ النعيمِ لدى حور وولدانِ

    To rejoice by his grandfather's side in that garden,

    At what he sees there of spirit and sweet herbs aplenty.

  21. يزهو لدى جدهِ في روضها فرحاً

    بما يلاقيه من رَوحِ وريحانِ

    He turned away from this world and all its frills and fancies,

    When he saw that all who run after it live in misery.

  22. ومال عن زينة الدنيا وزخرفها

    لما رأى كل مشغولٍ بها عاني

    The abode of sorrow is not devoid of woe for any,

    Though good fortune may lessen the cares of those who occupy it.

  23. دارُ الأسى ليس يخلو المرءُ من كدرٍ

    فيها وإن زاد بَشرِّهِ بنقصانِ

    It makes one quake between passions four-

    Desire, ego, lusts and the devil's snare.

  24. يروَّع المرءُ فيها بين أربعةٍ

    هوىً ونفس وشهْواتٌ وشيطانِ

    If the noble were valued here according to his worth,

    We would have stood against the enemy on the battlefield.

  25. لو أعِطى الحرّ فيها قدر قيمتهِ

    لما وقفنا مع الأعدا بميدانِ

    If but an iota of justice held sway in this world,

    We would not have been flung by the wicked ones into fires.

  26. أو كان فيها من الإنصاف خردلةٌ

    لما رمتنا لدى الهيجا بنيرانِ

    Nor would the riffraff have dared demand of us

    That we relinquish our money and homesteads.

  27. وما تجرأت الأوغادَ تطلبنا

    لأن نسلّمَ في مالٍ وأوطانِ

    Is it not the baseness of this world that makes them gang up

    And deem themselves the peers of lions courageous?

  28. أليس من خسة الدنيا تظاهرهم

    وجعلهم نفسَهم أقرانَ شجعانِ

    Thanks be to God that they were repelled in their rage,

    Foiled, returning in humiliation and defeat that enraged.

  29. والحمد لله قد رُدّوا يغيظهمو

    فلم ينالوا وقد باءوا بخذلانِ

    So pray, O noblest of nobles, to God to grant us

    Victory mighty, and reward us well for our pain.

  30. فيا أولى الأزهر ادعوا الله ينصرنا

    نصراً عزيزاً ويجزينا بإحسانِ

    To heal our sick, destroy our foes, and shroud

    Our dead in forgiveness and mercy's embrace.

  31. وأن يعافى مرضانا ويُهلكُ أع

    دانا ويشمل موتانا بغفرانِ

    Disperse the unbelievers, O Lord, vanquish them, O Lord,

    Rain misfortune and ruin down upon them.

  32. فبدّد الكفر يا مولاي واقضِ على

    أهليهِ واسكب عليهم سحْبَ خسرانِ

    Strengthen our army and fortify their resolve,

    Make steadfast Egypt, abode of faith.

  33. وانصر عساكرنا وأشدد عزائمهم

    وقوّ مصراً فمصرٌ دار إيمان
