1. ما كل مَن سمع النداءَ يجيبُ

    كلاَّ ولا كلَّ الرماةِ تصيبُ

    Not all who hear the call will answer

    No, and not all archers hit their mark

  2. هل كلَّ ساجعةِ الربى قمريةٌ

    أو كلّ غصنٍ في الرياض رطيبُ

    Are all who weep in agony so fair?

    Or every branch in gardens freshly green?

  3. في غير ليلى لا يروقُ لمغرمٍ

    غزلٌ ولا يستحسنُ التشبيبُ

    To one who loves no other can compare

    Though verse may neatly ply the trope between

  4. ما كلَّ من علق الغرامُ بقلبهِ

    يحلو لديهِ ويعذُب التغذيبُ

    Not everyone whose heart is passion's snare

    Will find it sweet, though long has he foreseen

  5. تبدو الأوابدَ للأنامِ وإنما

    يجفو المنامَ لقيدهنَّ أديبُ

    The ruins seem a refuge, cold and bare

    To strangers, but to me a friend, serene
