أهدي إلى السامي المقام سلامِيَهْ

وأبثّ أشواقي له وغراميَهْ

I send my greetings to the exalted one

And express to him my passions and love

وإليه أشكو لوعة وصبابة

لو كان يعلمها لرّق لحاليهْ

To him I complain of the anguish and torment

If he only knew he would have mercy on my state

ولواعجا أذكى البعادُ لهيبها

ومدامعاً رقت فأضحت جاريهْ

If distance ignited its flames

And tears flowed copiously and became running

ضُمْر وإن السبق من أوصافها

والعشق والبرحاء من أوصافيهْ

For sure, precedence is among his attributes

And love and separation are among my attributes

قسما بإخوان الصفاء وما حوى

أرجُ الوباء من المعاني الغاليهْ

I swear by the brothers of purity and what it contains

I hope the affliction will cease from the precious meanings

وبما دنا للقلب من ألم الضنا

وبما عليه قد انطوت أحشائيهْ

By the pain that drew near to my heart

And by what wrapped around my entrails

وبدمعي القاني وشجو فؤادي ال

عاني وحرّ صبابتي المتواليهْ

By my flowing tears and the burning of my heart

That I suffer and the heat of my successive torments

وبطيب أيام خلت وبكُم جلت

كأس الصفا صرفا وكانت خاليهْ

By the good days that have passed and the sorrow that I tasted

When I sipped the cup of joy and it was empty

ما بنتمو عن مهجتي يوماً ولو

بنتم وطال البين عن إنسانيهْ

You never disappeared from my soul even

If you disappeared and the separation from you lingered

كلا ولا أنا ملت عن دين الهوى

أبداً ولا نقص الزمان وداديهْ

No, and I never got bored of the religion of passion

Ever, and time did not diminish my love

بهواكمو وبسكّريّ حديثكم

ما زال قلبي مغرماً ولسانيهْ

With your love and the sweetness of your talk

My heart is still infatuated and my tongue

ودواء أسقامي سلامة ذكركم

وأنا السقيم ولا أعاف دوائيهْ

And the remedy for my sickness is your safety

While I am sick and my medicine does not heal me

وكما علمت صبابتي وتشوقي

لحماك والشيطان ما أنسانيهْ

And as you know my torment and my longing

For your protection, and Satan does not make me forget you

وإليك يا قطب المعارف أصبحت

بكتابها نصف المعدل ساريهْ

And to you, O pole of knowledge, I became

With her book, halfway apologizing

والعذر كل العذر في تأخيرها

عنكم فليس الأمر طبق مراديهْ

The full excuse for its delay

From you, for the matter is not as I wish

هذا ولولا الوقت غير مساعد

لي والنوى والبعد شتت باليهْ

And if not for the unsuitable time for me

And the purpose and distance confusing my mind

كللت تيجان الطروس بلؤلؤ

من مدحكم وملأت هذي القافيهْ

I would have crowned the peacocks with pearls

From praising you and filled this rhyme
