1. سواي بهذه الدنيا يُبالي

    وغيري يتّقي غِيرَ الليالي

    None else in this world cares as I do,

    While others fear the nights.

  2. ومثلي لا تروّعه الدياجي

    ولا يخشى مكافحةَ الرجالِ

    And the likes of me are not startled by darkness,

    Nor do they fear fighting men.

  3. أمدّ إلى اللصوص يدَي دفاعٍ

    وإن كانوا ذوي أيدٍ طوالِ

    I extend to thieves my hands in defense,

    Though their hands be long.

  4. أصيح إذا عثوا في الأرض فيهم

    بصوتٍ مثل صوت الليث عالِ

    I cry out when they wreak havoc on earth,

    With a voice like a roaring lion.

  5. أنادي واحدٌ فيجيب طه

    ويتبعه محمدُ في المقالِ

    I call one, so Taha answers me,

    And Muhammad follows in speech.

  6. وأصرخ في وجوههمو فتمسي

    مفاصلهم لبأسي في انفصالِ

    I scream in their faces, so their joints

    Tremble from my might and separate.

  7. وإن دارت رحى الهيجاءَ يوماً

    وشب الحربُ واشتبك العوالي

    And if the mill of turmoil spins one day,

    And war flares up and the nobles lock arms,

  8. وقطبت الكماةُ لها وجوهاً

    وخاض الموتَ أبطالُ النزالِ

    And death wades into the heroes of combat,

    Until swords break against swords.

  9. ولاقت مثلها الصعدات حتى

    تكسرت النصالُ على النصالِ

    And the fainthearted take flight from dread,

    And children grow up amid the horror of battle.

  10. وطار من المخافةِ كل لبٍ

    وشابَ الطفلُ من هولِ القتالِ

    I charge at the foe and stab them

    With a blade sharper than arrows.

  11. حملتُ على العدا وطعنتُ فيهم

    بنبُّتٍ أحدّ من النبالِ

    I plunge into their fray and tear out

    Hearts that cannot endure my blows.

  12. وخضت غمارهم وخلعت منهم

    قلوباً ما بقدرتها احتمالي

    And though I am tempted to pierce the white swords,

    My sword drips for the white necks.

  13. وإني باجتياز البيد مغرىً

    ولكن عن وصالِ البيضِ سالي

    I am delighted when a cheek sways by,

    But do not desire the ladies of litters.

  14. وأطرب بالجِمال تسير وخداً

    ولا أصبو لرباتِ الحَمَالِ

    I have spent my life traveling

    Between encampments and wanderings.

  15. قضيتُ جميع مري في سفارِ

    أردد بين حلٍّ وارتحالِ

    One day in Abi Hamid, one day

    In Sinkat, and one day in Natal.

  16. فيوماً في أبي حمدٍ ويوماً

    بسنْكاتٍ ويوماً في نتالِ

    One day I climb the highlands of Najd

    And graze in its wide open ranges,

  17. ويوماً أرتقي هضباتِ نجدٍ

    وأرتع في مرابعها العوالي

    I left the lands of Sikkut and Berno

    Though my family and wealth be there.

  18. تركت بلاد سكّوتٍ وبرنو

    وإن يكُ فيهما أهلي ومالي

    And I sailed to Aranga

    And roamed the land of Transvaal.

  19. وأعلمت الركاب إلى أرنجا

    وجُستُ خلالَ أرضِ ترنسفالِ

    I traversed the lands of Europe wherein

    I witnessed the wondrous carnival,

  20. وجُبتُ ديارَ أورُبّا وفيها

    شهدت عجيبَ عيد الكرنفالِ

    Faces from which jinn recoil

    And voices like donkeys braying.

  21. وجوه يستعيذ الجنُّ منها

    وتنفر من بشاعتها السعالي

    I saw strange things in France

    And loved the lands of Portugal,

  22. وأعمال يحال العقل فيها

    وأصوات كتصهال البغالِ

    I plunged into its turbulent waves, stabbing its depths,

    And did not fall short of cutting mountains.

  23. وأبصرت الغرائب في فرنسا

    وراقتني بلاد البرتغالِ

    I find in its map strange traces

    From relics I inquire of its keepers,

  24. وخضت اللجّ أطعن في حشاها

    وما قصرت في قطعِ الجبالِ

    And De Lesseps bowed to me in submission

    As I passed over the canal.

  25. أرى لي في غواربها غريباً

    من الآثارِ أسال من أرالِ

    And in the East I stir trouble, yet

    In the Far West I have the widest range.

  26. وديليسِبْس قد ألقى القنا لي

    خضوعاً إذ مررت على القنالِ

    I walk upright though stars show the way astray,

    When darkness falls and light hides away,

  27. ولي في الشرقِ مضطرب وإني

    بأقصى الغرب لي أقصى مجالِ

    And people take refuge in the North Pole,

    I take refuge in the pole of God’s folk.

  28. أسير على هدي وسواي يلفَى

    وإن رصد الكواكب في ضلالِ

    The pole of guidance, the pole of perfection,

    Is my clan’s guide in any matter,

  29. إذا دجَت الغياهبُ واكفهرت

    ولاذ الناس بالقطب الشمالي

    And my neighborhood’s example in any case,

    The refuge of resolve, secret of the seal,

  30. ألوذ بقطب أهل الله قطب ال

    ورى قطب الهدى قطب الكمالِ

    Of lofty status, my Lord Al-Marghani,

    Of noble origin, perfect in grace,

  31. دليل عشيرتي في أي أمرِ

    وقدوة جيرتي في كلِ حالِ

    An ocean that overflows upon the land with waves.

    His mind makes hardship easy,

  32. مكين الحزم سر الختم عالي ال

    مقامِ المرغنيّ أبي المعالي

    And permits tribulations to unfurl.

    By him the dwellings came to stillness

  33. كريم الأصل جم الفضلِ بحرٌ

    يفيضُ على البرية باللآلي

    And their embers faded after blazing.

    Safety became wholesome when

  34. له فكر يردُ العسرَ يسراً

    ويأذنُ للمصاعبِ بانحلالِ

    His wishes were met by the people.

    And the tribes concurred, responding

  35. به أمست سواكنُ في سكونِ

    وجمرتها خبت بعد اشتعالِ

    To his noble commands compliantly.

    All submitted to him save a few

  36. وفي الطيبِ استطيب الأمن لما

    طمانيب اطمأن بها الأهالي

    Transgressors who took to the hills.

    But he holds no missiles to supposedly

  37. ووافقه القبائل قابلات

    أوامره الكريمة بامتثالِ

    Bombard the hills.

    Nor does he stand by a river,

  38. ودان له الجميع سوى قليل

    من الباغين لاذوا بالقلالِ

    So let pebbles rain on them from the hills!

    But the might of piety restrained him

  39. وما بيديهِ متراليوزُ حتى

    يقالُ توقعوا قذف القلالِ

    From troubling the white and the tanned nobles.

    The wind of executioner diminishes no victory,

  40. ولا هو واقف بسبيل نهر

    فليجئهم له صفر القلالِ

    Indeed, victory lies in the gain of majesty.

    And no young man succeeds but by a hidden secret,

  41. ولكن سطوة التقوى كفَتْهُ

    عناءَ البيض والسمرِ العوالي

    Or by the strength of strategy.

    Man is not man by the sword,

  42. وما ريح الجلاد تُقِلّ نصراً

    بلى فالنصر في ربحِ الجلالِ

    But by intellect and insight.

    Many preceded him to the Sudan,

  43. وما ظفر الفتى إلاّ بسرٍ

    خفيّ أو بقوة الاحتيالِ

    Yet did nothing but deter mules.

    Among them is he who fortified himself

  44. وما الإنسانُ إنسان بسيف

    ولكن بالمدارك والخلال

    In square forts and tied himself in shackles.

    The enemy cried out to him, so he sank down in weakness,

  45. وكم سبقته للسودانَ ناسٌ

    وما فعلوا سوى زجرِ البغالِ

    And his gang met a woeful fate.

    Among them is he who walked stooped,

  46. فمنهم من تحصنَ في قلاعِ

    مربعةٍ فأوثق في عقالِ

    So his return was impossible.

    Among them is he who was surrounded by foes

  47. وصاح بهِ العدو فخرّ وهناً

    وحاقَ برهطهِ سوء المجالِ

    With no means of escape.

    Had men been thus, O Berberis,

  48. ومنهم من سرى يمشي مكبًّا

    فعاد رجوعهُ فوق المحالِ

    Your allegiance would have the strongest bond.

    I ransom you, so take vengeance for me from a time

  49. ومنهم من أحاطَ بهِ الأعادي

    ما أجداه إدرارَ النوالِ

    That promotes instability through occupation.

    I will recite my praises of you in my poetry

  50. فلو كان الرجال كذا بربريٍّ

    له بولائكم أقوى اتصالِ

    And fill my registers with your virtues,

    For you are far beyond enumeration, so what can

  51. فديتك فانتصف لي من زمانٍ

    يعزز الاختلال بالاحتلالِ

    A servant say upon embarking on praises?

  52. سأملي في مدائحكم حديثي

    وأملأ من محاسنكم سجالي

  53. وفلك جلّ عن حصرٍ فماذا

    يقول العبد في بدءِ الأمالي
