1. دع في الغرام مقالة السُّفَهاءِ

    واخلع عذاركَ في هوى العذراءِ

    Leave the talk of love to the foolish ones,

    And take off your excuse in the passion of the maiden.

  2. واجسر على اللذات وانتهز الصبا

    يا صاح وامتطِ صهوة الأهواءِ

    And be bold in pleasures, and seize the prime of life,

    O companion, and ride the steed of desires.

  3. واحرص على زمن السرورِ فإنهُ

    ربَما يفوت وأنتَ في اغفاءِ

    And strive for the time of joy, for it may

    Pass while you are heedless and sleeping.

  4. أعضِ الشبابَ نصيبهُ حيث الزما

    ن مطاوعُ واعكف على الصهباءِ

    Give youth its share while it is submissive,

    And devote yourself to the radiant white one.

  5. مِن كف غانية إذا ما أسفرت

    أخفت بطلعتها إيَاةُ ذُكاءِ

    From a mature palm, when it blossoms,

    Its blossoms conceal the stars in their brightness.

  6. وإذا رنت قتلت وإن هي كلمت

    ميتاً غدا من جملةِ الأحياءِ

    And when it hums, it kills, and if it speaks,

    The dead will be among the living the next day.

  7. وإذا انثنت يا خجلة الغصن الرطي

    بِ ويا شقاء الصعدةِ السمراءِ

    And when the slender, delicate branch bends down,

    O agony for the tanned climb!

  8. هيفاء نجلاء العيون ولا أرى

    إلاّ العيونَ النجل للهيفاءِ

    She is the shining bright-eyed one, I see none but

    The bright-eyed for the shining one.

  9. إن العيون النجل أصل بليّتي

    ومنِيتي وصبابتي وعنائي

    The bright eyes are the source of my affliction,

    My demise, my youthfulness and my exhaustion.

  10. هن اللواتي في الهوى أوقعْنَني

    وشبَبْنَ في قلبي لظى بُرَحائي

    They are the ones who in love made me fall,

    And kindled in my heart burning embers.

  11. عشق العيون الضيقاتِ محرم

    عندي وهذا مذهب العقلاءِ

    Loving narrow eyes is forbidden for me,

    This is the doctrine of reasonable people.

  12. لله يوم أنعمت بوصالها

    فيه على أرض من الرقباءِ

    By God, the day I was blessed with being with her,

    I walked on air from ecstasy.

  13. ظلت تعاطيني كؤوس مدامة

    ممزوجة في روضةِ غناءِ

    She kept giving me cups of mixed wine

    In a garden of singing.

  14. ضحكتَ وقد بكت السحائب فوقها

    فعجبت من ضحكِ لها ببكاءِ

    You laughed while clouds above cried,

    I was amazed at her laughing while crying.

  15. والطيرُ كالعيدانِ فوق منابر ال

    عيدان تطربنا بحسن غناءِ

    And birds on platforms like festivals,

    Fascinated us with their beautiful singing.

  16. فتكاملت لي كل أنواعِ المنى

    وطفقت أرفلُ في ثيابِ صفاءِ

    So all kinds of wishes were fulfilled for me,

    And I began to dress in robes of clarity.

  17. وأخذتُ أرشف من رحيقِ رضابها

    وألفها معْ عفة بكسائي

    And I started to sip from the nectar of her mouth,

    And got accustomed to her with modesty in my clothes.

  18. منطقتها بيدي وقد وسّدتها

    عضدي ونلتَ من الزمانِ منائي

    I held her hand and she leaned on my shoulder,

    And I got my share from time.

  19. قضّيتَ بالتعنيقِ ساعاتي وكن

    تَ من التُقى بمكانةَ علياءِ

    I spent my hours in embraces,

    While you were in the highest place of piety.

  20. ما عشتْ في الدنيا فشبيبي لها

    ولسيدي عبد المجيدِ ثنائي

    I have not lived in this world, so my youth is for her,

    And for my master Abdul Majeed my praise.

  21. الكامل الورع الأجل المرتقي

    درج المكارم أوحدِ الفضلاءِ

    The perfect devout eminent one,

    Unique in nobleness among the virtuous.

  22. ذو رقّة تحيي النفوسَ كأنها

    أرجِ النسيم سَرى من الزوراءِ

    Of gentleness that revives souls as if it were

    The fragrance of the morning breeze from Al-Zawra.

  23. متوشح بالفضلِ معتقلٌ بهِ

    متدرع درعَىْ تقيً وسخاءِ

    Clad in virtue, endowed with it,

    Armored with the shields of piety and generosity.

  24. والحلم شيمتهُ فليس يقابل ال

    جاني بغير الصفح والإغضاءِ

    Clemency is his quality, so he does not meet

    A sinner except with forgiveness and overlooking.

  25. كرم الطباعِ صفاتهُ وسماته

    إذ ليس يخشى سطوةَ الأعداءِ

    Generosity of disposition, his traits and features,

    For he does not fear the tyranny of enemies.

  26. علماً بأن الدهر كفّل نفسهُ

    ردَّ العدا بمذلةِ وشقاءِ

    Knowing that fate has guaranteed itself

    To return harm with humiliation and misery.

  27. تخِذ السماحةَ والمروءةَ ديدناً

    كتواصل الآلاءِ بالآلاءِ

    He took forgiveness and chivalry as his way,

    Like the succession of favors upon favors.

  28. كم في دروسِ العلم أوضح مشكلا

    ولكَم جلاَ من نكتةَ غراءِ

    How many lessons he clarified problems,

    And how much hidden wisdom did he uncover!

  29. كم فك منه طلاسماً يا طالما

    قد أغلقت عن فكرة النظراءِ

    How many symbols did he decode, that had

    Long perplexed the minds of contemporaries!

  30. مزجت مسائلهِ به وكأنهُ

    عند السؤالِ معدُّها بإناءِ

    He mixed his questions as if, when asked,

    He had prepared their answers in a vessel.

  31. لم يلْفَ يوماً في الجوابِ مقصراً

    وبيانهُ لما يُشَبْ بخفاءِ

    He was never lacking in answers,

    And his elucidation left no ambiguity.

  32. يا أوحد العلماء بل يا أمجد ال

    نبلاءِ بل يا أسعد السعداءِ

    O unique of scholars! Rather, O most glorious

    Of nobles! Rather, O happiest of the happy!

  33. عذراً فما أخرت مدحك ناسياً

    بل إنما الأمداح للأكفاءِ

    Sorry, I did not delay praising you out of forgetfulness,

    But praises are for the competent.

  34. أنَّي يقومَ بحقِ مدحكَ شاعر

    ما لامتداح علاكَ والشعراءِ

    For who can rightly praise you,

    When praise of you is beyond poets?

  35. فعُلاكَ بحرٌ زاخرَ لا تبلغ ال

    معشارَ منهُ ألسنُ البلغاءِ

    For your eminence is an abundant sea, the tongues

    Of eloquent ones cannot reach a drop of it.

  36. وإلى جنابكَ بنت فكرس أقبلت

    بحليّها تمشي على استحياءِ

    And to your side, my thought came

    Adorned in its ornaments, walking bashfully.

  37. صِيغت لأكمل كامل من كاملِ

    لا زلتَ دهركَ في سناً وسناءِ

    Formed for the most perfect perfect one,

    You have spent your life in prosperity and success.
