I humbled myself before the All-Merciful in whatever befalls me,
certain that God is never heedless.
And I am certain that, if God wills a thing,
it goes forth and comes to pass—from the Near, the Bestower.
So I do not spend my life in anguish; in His name
I have held fast all my days, neither hard-pressed nor afraid.
How many ordeals have swept over me, and I have faced them
with a spacious heart, without foreboding or flinching.
I asked, by the Lord of the House: Have I, apart from Him,
any protector against time’s vicissitudes, when all support fails?
And have I any refuge but Him when I seek shelter?
Apart from Him—my Lord—whom can I look to when calamities descend?
I raised the hands of supplication to Him, and they drew back
brimming with what they wished for—not the empty froth of one bereaved.
Whoever observes God’s due in every affair
will find Him a refuge from devastating calamities.
