1. لهيبٌ مِن الرَّمضاءِ يبدو كأنما

    جهنَّمُ تُلقِي حرَّها ثُمَّ تلفحُ

    A blaze from the desert appears as though

    Hell is casting its heat and then blowing

  2. إذا الشَّمسُ حلَّتْ في السَّماءِ محلَّها

    تدلَّتْ بسهمِ الموتِ مِن حيث يُفصِحُ

    When the sun settles in its place in the sky

    It hangs with the arrow of death wherever it points

  3. سمومٌ أفاعٍ أو قتادٌ مسوَّمٌ

    تَمُوجُ به رِيحُ السَّمُومِ وتَسرحُ

    Poisons of snakes or a poisoned arrow

    Stirred by the wind of poisons wandering

  4. ترى بَرَدَ الأشطان صهدًا بقَيظِه

    إذا أقبلتْ بين الجداولِ تمرحُ

    You see the chill of shade welcome in its heat

    When it comes between the streams playing

  5. ترى الهقلةَ الصَّمَّاءَ تحدو بربِّها

    خمائلَ أقواها الهجيرُ المقدَّحُ

    You see the deaf rock singing the praises of its Lord

    The smooth stones polished by the crashing torrent

  6. إذا برزتْ للشمسِ ألقتْ بِرَحلِها

    ولاذَتْ بأقتابِ القطا وهْي تصدَحُ

    When it emerges to the sun it casts off its burdens

    And takes refuge in hillsides while splitting loudly

  7. وقد أيقنتْ أنَّ السِّباعَ يردُّها

    مِن الشمسِ سهمٌ نافذٌ مترنِّحُ

    And it knows for certain that the beasts drive it back

    From the sun an arrow piercing and moaning

  8. تؤمُّ نميرَ الماءِ من كلِّ موردٍ

    لعلَّ نميرَ الماءِ عنها يروِّحُ

    It yearns for the soft flowing of water from every spring

    Hoping the soft flowing of water will give it comfort

  9. تراقبُ دَفْعَ الطيرِ قد ندَّ سربُه

    وشدَّ إلى حيثُ العضا والتَّسَدُّحُ

    It watches the birds together take off in flocks

    And head to where there is food and crowding

  10. ومالت لِنجمِ اللَّيلِ تخطبُ ودَّه

    وقَدْ حجَبتْه الشَّمسُ مِن حيثُ تصبحُ

    And it inclined to the star of night courting its affection

    But the sun concealed it from where it rises

  11. كأنَّ صغارَ الطَّيرِ تحتَ سمائها

    لِسانُ لهيبٍ أو هشيمٌ مقرَّحُ

    As if the little birds beneath its sky

    Are tongues of flame or shredded tatters

  12. إذا ما استجارَتْ بالظِّلالِ تكشَّفَتْ

    ظلالُ لَظًى تَنفي الثَّواءَ وتَجرحُ

    When it takes refuge in the shadows, the shadows

    Of agony deny comfort and wound

  13. فلا اللَّيلُ يرقِيها ببَردِ نسيمِه

    ولا الماءُ يَروي غُلَّةً تتندَّحُ

    So neither does the night soothe it with the breeze’s coolness

    Nor does water quench the blazing embers

  14. أليسَ يخافُ المارقونَ بما رأوا

    إذا نالهم فيها عذابٌ مصبِّحُ

    Do not the rebels fear what they have seen

    If an avenging torment should strike them there

  15. غداةَ يرَونَ النَّارَ تدعو بحزبِها

    لهم بِصَنيع السُّوءِ فيحٌ وأقرُحُ

    Tomorrow they will see the fire calling them with its partisans

    To them for their misdeeds, raging and festering
