Two companions for lovers in the difficult encounter

أحبك هل تدري عيونك ما الذي

جنته على قلبي بواسطة الهدب

I love you, do you know what your eyes

Have brought upon my heart by way of fascination

أحبك ليت الحب يسعف ظامئ

بتر شافة من نبعه السائغ الشرب

I love you, if only love would quench the thirst

Of one who severs a lip from its delicious spring to drink

أقول لها والشعر رهب عيونه

إذا أمرته انفض عن لؤلؤ رطب

I say to her, and poetry is the saline of her eyes

If I commanded it to shake off from a moist pearl

مريه ففي عينيك ينبوع سره

وهل في سوى عينيك من منهل عذب

Show her, for in your eyes is a secret spring

And is there in anything but your eyes a sweet fountain?

فعيناك لم تترك مكانا بخاطري

لغيرك إطلاقا على البعد والقرب

So your eyes have not left any place in my thoughts

For another, neither from afar nor from nearby

تملكته روحا ونبضا ونسمة

وأمسيت في جنبي ألصق من جنبي

You have possessed it, soul and pulse and breath

And you have become closer to my side than my own side

مضى زمن يا نفحة العمر وانقضى

من العمر عهد فاض بالشعر والحب

An era has passed, oh zephyr of life, and is gone

From life, an epoch overflowing with poetry and love

وخلّد أحلى الذكريات على المدى

تقر بها عيني ويشقى بها قلبي

And it has immortalized the sweetest memories for all time

My eyes acknowledge them and my heart agonizes over them

فلولا الجوى والوجد والشوق والهوى

وعيناك لم يكتب على النفس من ذنب

For if not for fervor, passion, longing and love

And your eyes, no sin would have been written upon my soul
