لغة القرآن يا شمس الهدى

صانك الرحمن من كيد العدى

O tongue of the Quran, O sun of guidance

Protected by the Most Merciful from the guile of enemies

هل على وجه الثرى من لغة

أحدثت في مسمع الدهر صدى

Is there any language on the face of earth

That made an echo in the hearing of time

مثلما أحدثته في عالم

عنك لا يعلم شيئاً أبداً

As you made in the world

About you, one knows nothing at all

فتعاطاك فأمسى عالم

بك أفتى وتغنى وحدا

So mastering you, one becomes a scholar

With you he gives legal opinions, sings poetry, and recites solo

وعلى ركنك أرسى علمه

خبر التوكيد بعد المبتدا

And on your pillar he built his knowledge

Reporting definitive information after the subject

أنت علمت الألى أن النهى

هي عقل المرء لا ما أفسدا

You taught people that prohibition

Is one's intellect, not what corrupts

ووضعت الاسم والفعل ولم

تتركي الحرف طليقاً سيدا

And you put the noun and verb and didn't

Leave the particle uncontrolled, O master

أنت من قومت منهم ألسن

تجهل المتن وتؤذي السندا

You are the one who enabled tongues

That don't know the text and harm the authority

بك نحن الأمة المثلى التي

توجز القول وتزجي الجيدا

With you we are the ideal nation

That summarizes speech and pours forth the bounty

بين طياتك أغلى جوهر

غرد الشادي بها وانتضدا

Within your folds is the most precious essence

With which the happy one sang and became impassioned

في بيان واضح غار الضحى

منه فاستعدى عليك الفرقدا

In clear eloquence the cave of dawn

Envied you and so the butterflies attacked you

نحن علمنا بك الناس الهدى

وبك اخترنا البيان المفردا

We taught people guidance through you

And with you we chose the singular eloquence

وزرعنا بك مجداً خالد

يتحدى الشامخات الخلدا

And planted through you lasting glory

That defies the towering eternities

فوق أجواز الفضا أصداؤه

وبك التاريخ غنى وشدا

Above the breadths of space its echoes

And through you history sang and captivated

ما اصطفاك الله فينا عبث

لا ولا اختارك للدين سدى

God did not choose you among us in vain

Nor select you for the religion fruitlessly

أنت من عدنان نورٌ وهدى

أنت من قحطان بذل وفدا

You are from Adnan, light and guidance

You are from Qahtan, self-sacrifice and ransom

لغة قد أنزل الله به

بينات من لدنه وهدى

The tongue in which God sent down

Clear proofs from Himself and guidance

والقريض العذب لولاها لم

نغم المدلج بالليل الحدا

And sweet versification, without which

The well-constructed ode would not have sung by night

حمحمات الخيل من أصواته

وصليل المشرفيات الصدى

The neighing of horses from its sounds

And ringing of the lofty minarets’ echo

كنت أخشى من شبا أعدائه

وعليها اليوم لا أخشى العدا

I used to fear the youth of its enemies

But today I do not fear hostility

إنما أخشى شبا جُهاله

من رعى الغي وخلى الرشدا

Rather I fear the youth of its ignorant ones

Who neglected virtue and abandoned righteousness

يا ولاة الأمر هل من سامع

حينما أدعو إلى هذا الندا

O guardians of authority, is there a listener

When I call to this appeal

هذه الفصحى التي نشدو به

ونُحيي من بشجواها شدا

This eloquence we chant with

And revive from its thrilling, captivation

هو روح العرب من يحفظه

حفظ الروح بها والجسدا

It is the soul of the Arabs, he who protects it

Protects the soul and body through it

إن أردتم لغة خالصة

تبعث الأمس كريماً والغدا

If you want an unadulterated tongue

To send yesterday honorably and tomorrow

فلها اختاروا لها أربابه

من إذا حدث عنها غرّدا

Then for it choose its masters

Those who, when they speak of it, trill

وأتى بالقول من معدنه

ناصعاً كالدُر حلى العسجدا

And bring speech from its source

Shining like a pearl, adornment of assemblies

يا وعاء الدين والدنيا مع

حسبك القرآن حفظاً وأدا

O vessel of religion and world together

The Qur'an suffices you for protection and performance

بلسان عربي، نبعه

ما الفرات العذب أو ما بردى

In the Arabic tongue, whose source

Is neither the sweet Euphrates nor the Nile

كلما قادك شيطان الهوى

للرّدى نجاك سلطان الهدى

Whenever the devil of passions

Took you towards ruin, the sultan of guidance saved you
