وكم نظرت وقد أكبرت من جبل
أشم يزلق عن أطرافه البصر
How often I have gazed, awestruck by a mountain—
so lofty that sight slips from its outer edges.
عضت به الزعزع النكباء محنقةً
علواً وسفلاً فلم يلمم به الخور
The ill-starred tempest bit into it in fury,
above and below—yet weakness never came near it.
فكنت أحقر ما استعظمت ملتفتاً
إلى الأبي الذي التفت به الغير
Then I would deem small what I had thought great, turning
to the proud one around whom fortune’s changes swirled.
