Salwan, do not grieve if my allotted time betrays me.
Between one wound and another, hope takes root.
Do not grieve, my daughter, if my times close in on me.
For sins are washed clean by the tears of purity.
A lifetime may become dreams that we pursue—
They race, and we race; they leave us bleeding, yet we never arrive.
Salwan, do not ask me about our story:
What did we do—and what, woe to them, did they do?
They squandered a lifetime—alas for life!—if life should turn
Away from us, and one possessed by madness pronounce judgment.
A heavy age made us drink from sorrow’s cup.
How can we escape when every stratagem has failed us?
Sorrow is in the heart, in the depths, in our blood.
A long despair—how, then, can the wound heal?
Our days still deceive us with illusion.
A grave of fear enfolds us, and we endure.
Do not ask me why sorrow has squandered us;
Ask sorrow whether every path has closed around it.
If the earth grows too cramped for dreams in a homeland,
The light of the dream is still ripening on the horizon.
These skulls, transformed into flowers, will be borne
By a new age, for those who lived—and those who departed.
This blood will water our land with hope.
Time may mistake my address, and I may never arrive.
If my times close in on me, I will not reproach them.
Does the mountainside dream of loving the mountain?
Salwan, O joy upon the earth, carrying me—
In the light of your eyes there is no despair, no weariness.
Your eyes, my oasis, are a lifetime I embrace.
Though the earth grows narrow and our eyes stream with tears.
I squandered my life singing of love in an age
Upon which two things died: love and hope.
I squandered my life selling dreams in a homeland
Upon which two things thrived: falsehood and fraud.
How often the seas of distance courted me, shyly.
I cannot bear separation—how could I endure it?
Love still has a home within our innermost selves.
How beautiful the fire: it dies down, then flares again.
Do not be afraid, my daughter; keep laughing always.
However long the night may last, at dawn it departs.
A dream still visits me within my thoughts:
That morning, birds, and love song will return.
Salwan, my little girl, never grieve.
For birds line their eyes with the light of dawn.
I remain a bird, singing of love through pain.
A dream may grant what allotted time never can...
