مضينا مع الدهر بعض الليالي

فجاء إلينا بثوب جديد

We journeyed with time some nights,

When it came to us in a new robe,

وأنواع عطر ونجم صغير

يداعبنا بالمنى من بعيد

With fragrances and a little star

That caressed us from afar with wishes,

وألحان عشق تذوب اشتياقا

وكأس وليل وأيام عيد

And melodies of longing that melted with yearning,

And a cup, a night, and days of celebration.

ونام الزمان على راحتينا

بريئا بريئا كطفل وليد

Time slept on our comfort

Innocently, innocently like a newborn babe.

وقام يزمجر وحشا جسورا

ويعصف فينا بقلب حديد

Then it rose roaring, an audacious beast,

Raging at us with an iron heart.

فأحرق في الثوب عطر الأماني

وألقى علينا رياحا تبيد

It burned the scent of wishes in the robe

And cast winds upon us that destroy.

وقال: أنا الدهر أغفو قليلا

ولكن بطشي شديد.. شديد

It said: I am time, I slumber briefly,

But my might is severe, severe.

فأعبث بالناس ضوءا وظلا

وساعات حزن وأنسام غيد

I make mischief with people, light and shadow,

Hours of sadness and gentle breezes of love,

وأمنحهم أمنيات عذابا

يعيشون فيها حياة العبيد

And grant them torturous wishes

In which they live the life of slaves.

وألقي بهم في ظلام كئيب

وأسخر من كل حلم عنيد

I cast them into dismal darkness

And mock every stubborn dream.

غدا في التراب يصيرون صمتا

وتمضي الليالي على ما أريد

Tomorrow in the dust they shall become silent

And the nights shall pass as I desire.

وأمضي على كل بيت أغني

تطوف الكؤوس بوهم.. جديد

And I shall pass by every house singing

A song, while cups wander with illusion...anew.
