حبّ تغلغل في الصميم

فقضى على الحب القديم

Love penetrated the core

And did away with old love

لمهفهف الحسن رص

ع وجنتيه بالنجوم

For the charm of his beauty I became

And made his cheeks into stars

جعلت رجوما للقلو

ب ولا كهاتيك الرجوم

I made his glances as missiles

To the hearts, and not like those glances

يا لائميّ وقد غدا

هدفاً لها قلب الملوم

Oh my blamers, it has become

A target for them, the heart of the blamed

الظلم من شيم النفو

س وقاهُ ربّي من ظلوم

Injustice is in the disposition of souls

And my Lord protected me from injustice

لم يبلغِ العشرينَ غ

ضّ الجسم ذو صوت رخيم

He was not yet twenty

Slim body with a soft voice

وعيونه عسليّةٌ

سكرى وذو شعر فحيم

And his eyes were sweet

Intoxicated and with elegant hair

والجيد أتلعُ والمرا

شف كم شكت قبل النسيم

His cheeks were smooth and his looks

How much they complained before the breeze

ظبيٌ تغار الغيد من

هُ ولا كغزلان الصريم

A gazelle that makes the beautiful jealous

And not like the shy gazelles

والمرد تحسده على

ردفيه والكشحِ الهضيم

And the young man envies him for

His shoulders and mature grace

ما كان أغناه ببن

تِ الثغرِ عن بنتِ الكروم

His lips’ daughter did not make him

Needful of the vineyards’ daughter

شوقي له شوق القطا

ةِ إلى الفراخِ أو الظليمِ

My longing for him is like the

Cat’s longing for chicks or the shaded

يا ليلةً كالريح م

رّتِ أو كأحلام النؤوم

Oh night like the passing wind

Or like the dreams of the sleepy

يتعثّر الواشي بها

كالغيظ في صدر الحليم

The watchman trips on it

Like anger in the heart of the forbearing

في جنحها عانقته

وحنوت كالأمِّ الرءوم

In its wings I embraced him

And cuddled like a compassionate mother

وصدَعتُ بابنةِ ثغره

شملَ الوساوس والهموم

And I passed with my lips’ daughter

Over his lips’ concerns and worries

فكأننا قيس وليل

ى إذ غرقنا في الحلوم

As if we were Qays and Layla

When we drowned in sweet dreams

اللَهُ ثالثنا ورا

بِعنا ابنة الطلعِ الهضيم

God is our third and fourth

The daughter of the mature morning

فجرٌ أفقتُ على سنا

هُ من ذهولي والوجوم

A dawn I woke up

To his slumber from my swoon

لما أطلّ على سما

ءِ الروح من فرق الغريم

When I cast light with my soul

From the separation of the foe

يا مرحبا بك يا بش

ر الوصل والفضل العميم

Hello, hello O human of union

And grace and favor the generous

أهلاً وسهلاً بالغرا

م البكر والأملِ الوسيم

Welcome, welcome to the stranger

Of virginity and the beautiful hope

أنقذتَ روحي من برا

ئنِ ذلك الحبّ الأثيم

You saved my soul from the creation

Of that immoral love

ورفتها من بعدما

كانت تمرّغُ في الأديم

And lifted it after it

Used to wallow in leather

وأرحتها من عربدا

تِ الشكّ والألم الأليم

And relieved it from the nonsense

Of doubt and painful pain

وهدَيتني بعد الضلا

لِ إلى الصراطِ المستقيم

And after straying guided me

To the straight path

والحب إحساس يجي

شُ بخافق الحرِّ الكريم

And love is a feeling that comes to

The pulse of the generous heat

والحبّ إلهام الجما

لِ المحضِ للذوقِ السليم

And love is the inspiration of

Pure beauty to the sound taste

هو روعة الخلق الجمي

ل ازدانَ بالخلقِ القويم

It is the elegance of fine creation

That is characterized by straight nature

هو الصغير شباك صي

دٍ وهو دينٌ للعظيم

It is the small window

Of the prey and it is the religion of the greatest

هذا وهل كان الهوى

إلّا لذي قلب رحيم

And could love be

Except for one with a compassionate heart

قم يا حبيب اليوم واس

كبها وخلّ ابن الغيوم

Stand up my darling today and pour it out

And let it spill on my chest so your ransom

وانضح بها كبدي فدي

تكَ فهيَ داميَةُ الكلوم

From the mockery of conditions, fates

And the deceitful time

من سخريات الوضع والأ

قدارِ والدهر الغشوم

I seek refuge in its cup

From every cast stone devil

إني أعوذ بكأسها

من كل شيطان رجيم

And I seek refuge what glittered from it

From every cursed despicable one

وأعيذها ما شعشعت

من كل مأفون لئيم

And from the ignorant and everyone

Of bad taste and feeling diseased

ومن الجهول وكل ذي

ذوقٍ وإحساسٍ سقيم

Silver golden dreams

Revealing worries

فضيّةٌ ذهبيّة الأ

حلامِ كاشفةُ الغموم

Of the alcohol that makes reason drunk

And how much I fell drunk by it in bliss

من خمر عاصمة الرشي

د وكم صرعتُ بها نديمي

And how much on its smile

I talked nonsense from a dear friend

ولكم بها جنّحتُ أحلا

مي فطارت في النعيم

It made Pharaoh, if he tested it

Return Moses’ stick

ولكم على بسماتها

سامرتُ من خلٍّ حميم

Or if Moses tasted it

He would have been most eloquent

صعبت فلو فرعون عا

قرها لردّ عصا الكليم

Oh you I won bliss with

And others spend the night in anguish

أو ذاقها موسى لكا

نَ من الفصحاة في الصميم

Do not ever listen

To the lies of slanderers and opponents

يا من به حزتُ النعي

مَ وبات غيري في جحيم

And the gossip of the vile

And crushing by the vulgar scum

لا تصغِ قطّ إلى أرا

جيفِ الكواشح والخصوم

Me and you are in a place

With springs of a dear friend

ونميمة النذل الوضي

عِ وفريةِ الوغد الزنيم

A place in it so much war has been

Declared and after attacks

فأنا وأنت بموطن

فيه الموارد من حميم

Except upon who has money, water

And chopped meat

وطنٌ به كم أعلِنَت

حربٌ ومن بعد الهجوم

And the free man is guaranteed in it

As the secret in the heart of the silent one

إلّا على ذي المال والما

ءِ المقطّرِ واللحوم

Lonely turned away

Yearning for the aggrieved anger

والحرُّ موؤودٌ به

كالسرِّ في قلب الكتوم

The falcons have fallen so I see

In the horizon no one swimming but the owl

متوحّدٌ متململ

لهفي على الحر المضيم

And I see the superior people in misery

And the inferior people in bliss

هوت الصقور فلا أرى

في الأفق يسبح غير بوم

The opinionated one was confused

And the wise one was lost

وأرى الأفاضل في جحي

مٍ والأراذل في نعيم

So when will the useful wind blow

And rage against the stubble

قد حار ذو الرأي الحصي

فِ وتاه ذو العقل الحكيم

I light up my cheeks

According to you my beloved of my will

فمتى تهبّ الريح عا

تيةً وتعصف بالهشيم

These poems they are my love

My dear resident brides

أمورّد الخدين حس

بك يا حبيبي من نظيمي

The solace of the sad one and comfort

For the suffering and condolence of the orphan

هذي القصائد وهي وح

يُ عرائس الحبّ المقيم

The birds sing along to them

Upon the retreat of the brutal night

سلوى الحزين وراحة ال

عاني وتعزية اليتيم

They receive the dawn in their verses

When it arrives

تشدو بها الأطيار عن

دَ تراجع الليل البهيم

I listened to them and raised them

For your high generous status

تستقبل الأصباح في

أبياتهنّ لدى القدوم

And I am the most knowledgeable of what you hide

And you are more knowledgeable than knowledge

لك صغتها ورفتها

لمقامك السامي الكريم

وأنا العليم بما تك

نّ وأنت أعلمُ بالعلم
