I kissed you farewell, my smile left me
Until we meet again on Eid morning
Why not, and woe to my family! They went too far
With blame, rebuke and threats
Do not come near our house, they swore
To cut you off if you come, my veins tied
I wonder if their suspicions aroused
By my walking at night and sitting
My sighing, yearning, and discontent with them
That's the way of the lost
What foolishness and ignorance separated
Me from the slender, delicate one
Oh what misery! Who will console me
In the days of dark separation
You who constantly complain, be calm
And gentle with the dejected poet
Morning has not dawned, your family sleeps
Rise with me, we will sip wine and make music
She hesitated, wavered, sighed
Cried, and my hand encircled her neck
I composed a poem inspired by her tears
The muses of inspiration are the tears of the gazelle
I prostrated in reverence and exaltation to her
My soul was elevated and long was my prostration
She moaned, surrendered, her eyes brimmed
Despite my composure and resilience
She said come to al-Shuwaitee, I said no
There lies every critic and envier
Of date palm fruit or clusters of grapes
I gave her to drink and sipped from her lips
O you who sipped from cheeks like roses
White as Iraqi wine, arousing
The spirit of resolve and daring like thunder
Whenever I say take my darling,
She says bring it my darling
Give it to me, do not spoil its purity
Leave it unmixed and undiluted
Let it take me to the world of wishes
From the world of greed and sorrow
Reveal its intoxication and overflowing joy
Lo, it dispels anxiety, worry and sadness
Silver are its dreams, golden
How much it has relieved my troubled thoughts
How much it has awakened my senses in me
How much I have confessed my existence before it
Let us together pluck its virginity
To the whisper of youth, the magic of music
My passions since the first allure
And my songs your laments, so listen to my warbling
Why not when murmurs stirred and my soul
Soared to distant imaginings
