Our night of determined resolution, how bright you are!
When you end, do not turn away.
For if my sins make the night long,
I cry over the brief night,
And the whiteness of dawn saves me from them -
Indeed I am saved from great evil.
As if the stars of Gemini are logs
Covered over a small expanse.
As if the two tridents are the hands of a hated one
Who persisted in his folly against me.
My friend and I stayed awake in a southern valley
For lightning flashing in Tihama.
If graves were dug up for every sin,
It would be known which was more sinful.
On the day of reckoning, delighting the eyes!
How strange is the meeting of those beneath the tombs.
I left the Udayn tribe drenched
In blood like fragrant wine.
I violated the homes of the tribe of ‘Abbad
And some of the raid cured my breast.
For Kulayb does not fulfill his word
When the hidden thoughts come forth.
We left Hammam bin Murra
With eagles tearing his chest.
He sways with a spear in his chest
And a gaping wound convulses him like a camel.
What a slain man Murra's son ‘Amr was!
And Jassas bin Murra, what a wicked spy!
As if the poor subordinate among them
Is a hireling in dangerous straits.
Yet Kulayb is not just
When the cave dweller fears the raider;
Nor is Kulayb just
When the orphan is denied scraps;
Nor is Kulayb just
When a neighbor seeking refuge is wronged;
Nor is Kulayb just
When hearts are straitened;
Nor is Kulayb just
When the fearful fear raids;
Nor is Kulayb just
When hardships are prolonged;
Nor is Kulayb just
When winds of tumult blow;
Nor is Kulayb just
When the provoked leaps on the provoker;
Nor is Kulayb just
When the wealthy man ignores the poor;
Nor is Kulayb just
When the rewarded man summons the tribe.
Umayma asks me about her father
Yet Umayma does not know my conscience.
No, by Umayma's father, he had no
Choice meat or abundant scraps.
Rather, we stabbed the tribe with a stab
To their platforms and their necks.
We topple the tribe prone to the ground
And seize the women’s robes and chests.
If not for the wind, I would hear from Bujur
The neighing of white mares with stallions.
A ransom to the Banu Shaqiqa the day they came
Like raging lions bellowing!
One morning it was as if we and our fathers
Were neighbors to ‘Unayza’s pasture.
As if the vertebra of the daughters of Na‘sh
Collapses onto the hands in a circle.
The Pleiades set toward Suhayl
Beaming like the summit of a great mountain.
They were our tribe, so they rebelled against us,
And so the blaze of hell met them.
Birds shadow them, alighting
As if the horses were dripping with musk.
