Not dead is he who lost his life fighting,
Like Jassas ibn Murrah of brave endeavor,
Who suffered a blow that pierced his heart,
Yet he did not seek comfort or respite.
For tomorrow and the day after still bear
Great tasks not accomplished, of high endeavor.
Grievous is what makes me weep for Kulayb
When he who did this deed is mentioned.
I will drink the cup undiluted and serve it
In a cup that utters no word of blame.
