حياتي عذابٌ وعيشي سرابُ

وأنتَ الأماني وتيكَ العـِذابُ

My life is torment, my living a mirage

While you are my wishes, yet you are my torment

يُقيمُ بنفسي شقاءٌ بئيسُ

وأنتَ النَّدى والهوى والرضابُ

Wretched misery dwells within my soul

While you are the dew, the love, the gentle rain

أحنٌّ إليكَ حناناً رطيبا

وتهفو إليكَ المُنى والرِّغابُ

I yearn for you with tender yearning

And desires and wishes incline toward you

فكيف الرّضا والنَّوى في احتدادٍ

وكيف السبيلُ وشوقي حرابُ

How can there be consent and purpose amidst adversity?

How can there be a way when my passion is devastation?

سقيتَ الغمامَ بطيب هواكَ

فياحبّذا البذلُ والانصبابُ

You watered the clouds with the sweetness of your love

So excellent is generosity and pouring forth

سكنتَ الدنى وانتشرتَ بهاءً

وغادرتَ كوني فعمَّ الضبابُ

You settled the world and spread radiance through it

And left my being so darkness prevailed

حنانيكَ يازهرَنفسي وزهوي

لقد أثـقـلَتـْني خطوبٌ صعابُ

Your tenderness, my blossoming soul and my pride

Burdensome woes have heavily weighed upon me

شكوتُ إليكَ غياباً ضريرا

وليلاً تمادى به الاغترابُ

I complained to you of a painful absence

And a night stretched on in estrangement

فكن لي نسيماً يهبُّ رخاءً

يطيبُ به عيشنا والشرابُ

So be to me a breeze that blows comfort

To sweeten our life and drink

فأنتَ الحياةُ إذا ماالتقينا

وأنتَ السُّها إن تهاوت شهابُ

For you are life when we meet

And you are ease if flames are extinguished

لك الأمنياتُ ولي أنتَ فيها

ضياءٌ حياةٌ ربيعٌ ربابُ

To you belong my wishes, and you are in them
