أَتانا البَريدُ التَغلُبِيُّ فَراعَنا
لَهُ خَبَرٌ شَفَّ الفُؤادَ فَأَنعَما
The Taghlibi courier came to us and struck us with dread.
He bore news that pierced the heart—and pierced it deep:
بِمَوتِ أَبي حَفصٍ فَلا آبَ راكِبٌ
بِمَوتِ أَبي حَفصٍ أَخَبَّ وَأَرسَما
Of Abu Hafs’s death. May no rider ever return
who, bearing news of Abu Hafs’s death, hurried at a trot and pressed on.
