مطلقٌ في سُراه من كل قيدِ
لم يفز عنده الزمان بكيدِ
Unbounded in his glory, free of all constraint
Time could not trick him with any feint
عاصَرَ الأولينَ من آدم الأول
لليوم للذي بعد بعد
He lived alongside the ancients since Adam the first
To this day and the next and the next
ومشى في مواكب الدَّهر حتى
بدَّلَ الدهرُ كلَّ عهدٍ بعهد
He walked in the processions of time until
Time replaced every era with another
ورأى النار في هياكل فرعون
، وفرعونُ في جلالٍ ومجد
He saw the fire in Pharaoh's temples
While Pharaoh was in majesty and glory
وتولّى زمانُه فرأى الأخلاف
تَبني الأهرام من كل صَلْد
His time came and he saw descendants
Building pyramids with every gray stone
ورأى الله حين كلَّم موسى
كيف يدعو لمن براه ويهدي
He saw God when He spoke to Moses
Calling to the righteous and guiding them
ورأى السَّيّدَ المسيحَ رأى الرحْمة
في معجز الولادة فرد
He saw the Master Christ, saw mercy
In the miracle of birth, matchless
ورأى المصطفى يبشِّر بالإسلام
في خُلقه القويم الأشدّ
He saw the Chosen One preaching Islam
With his righteous nature, most resolute
يا نبيَّ الإسلام ليس بخافٍ
لك حبٌّ أصونه لك عندي
O Prophet of Islam, I harbor no doubt
My love for you is protected within me
ومحبّوك قد أحبّوا لوعدٍ
وبطوعي أحببتُ من غير وعد
Your lovers loved you for a promise
While of my own will I loved without promise
أنت أخْلَصْتَني المودة آيا
تٍ، وأمَّنتني فأخلصت ودّي
You purified my affection through signs
And secured my devotion, so I reciprocated
أنت علّمتني البراعةَ في القو
، وسلسلتَ بالبلاغة وردي
You taught me eloquence with moral principles
And adorned my poetry with eloquent prose
يا نبيَّ الأخلاقِ والمثُلِ العُلْي
يا تَسامى الهوى فجئتك أُهدي
O exemplar of fine manners and lofty ideals
O pinnacle of passion, I come to present to you
جئتُ أُهديك من خمائل شعري
قافياتٍ ومن خمائل وَردي
From the orchards of my poetry I bring you
Rhyming verse and fragrant roses
خرجتْ حكمةُ القِداح بعبد الله
تؤسى وبالنياق لتَفدي
The wisdom of the glowing embers escaped through Abdullah
Lamenting and yearning to ransom itself
حاملاً سرَّه العظيمَ إلى الكون
، ولم يدرِ مفتدًى ما يؤدّي
Bearing its great secret to the universe
Not knowing the price it would pay
أيَّ سرٍّ حملتِ يا بنتَ وهبٍ
أيَّ عزٍّ على الزّمان ومجد؟
What secret did you carry, O daughter of Wahb?
What glory over the world and honor?
وتوالت على اليتيم العلاما
وأومت إليه إيماء قصد
The signs aligned for the orphan
And signaled to him with intent
وأشارت إلى النبيّ السماوا
تُ بأمرٍ من فارضٍ مستبِد
They pointed to the Prophet of the heavens
By order of the Almighty Ruler
وإذا الوحيُ يا محمدُ إقرأ
وإذا الوحي يا محمد أَدِّ
And there was the revelation: "O Muhammad, read"
And the revelation: "O Muhammad, warn"
يا رسول الجهاد في راية الحقْ
تطاولتُ في مديحك جهدي
O Messenger of holy war under the banner of truth
My efforts in praising you have reached their limit
أين من شأوك العظيم بياني
يا نبيّ البيان شفّعتُ قصدي؟
Where are my poor words next to your greatness?
O Prophet of eloquence, I ask you to pardon my attempt
جدّيَ الأخطلُ الذي عرف النا
سُ، وقد جاء في ثيابيَ جَدّي
My ancestor Al-Akhtal, who knew the people
Came to me in my clothes, my grandfather
أحمدُ الله أنني بين قوم
يُنزلون المسيح منزل حَمْد
I thank God that I am among a people
Who rank Christ in the same station as Ahmad
