1. كتبَ اللهُ لي البقاءَ مديدا

    واللغاتُ الحسان تهوى الخلودا

    God has ordained that I endure

    And the eloquent tongues adore eternity

  2. ما جفاني من نشأتي قطُّ ولدي

    بل كسوني من العلاءِ بُرودا

    Never since I was a child was I abandoned

    Rather they clothed me with the mantles of the eminent

  3. أيُّ نحرٍ بين اللغات كنحري

    قلدته يدُ القريضِ عُقودا

    Which vein among the languages compares to mine

    That the hand of poetry adorned with necklaces

  4. أيُّ صدرٍ يحوي الكنوز كصدري

    ويُريكَ الجمان فيه نضيدا

    Which bosom contains treasures like mine

    And shows you gems piled up within

  5. في الفيافي نشأتُ لكنَّ بُردي

    راقَ وشياً ولا يزالُ جديدا

    In adversity I was raised but my standard

    Remained splendid, eminent and ever renewed

  6. شُعرائي قد أَخرسوا بالقوافي

    كلَّ شادٍ يُسكتُ الغريدا

    My poets were silenced by rhymes

    Every chanter is muted by the warbler

  7. حَلقوا في العلى نُسوراً وصادوا

    ما رأَوهُ منَ المعاني فريدا

    They soared eagles in the heights and hunted down

    What they saw of unique ideas

  8. ولكم رنَّح المنابرَ فخراً

    خُطبائي وارقصوا الجلمود

    And how my preachers’ pulpits swaggered with pride

    Orators, dance away stagnation

  9. فتصفَّح أَسفارهم إنَّ فيها

    حِكماً تجعلُ الضَّلول رشيدا

    So peruse their scripts for in them

    Is wisdom that sets the stray aright

  10. كلُّ ندبٍ يخوض بحر بَياني

    لا يُحلي بغير درُي الجيدا

    Everyone who dares cross my sea of eloquence

    Can only adorn himself with my pearls

  11. وإذا ما تلا تراجم قومي

    أَبصرَ الأسد والأباة الصِيدا

    And when one reads the biographies of my people

    He sees the lion and the intrepid hunter

  12. ورأى الذوقَ في الفلا حضَرياً

    ورأى اللطف كيف يأوي البيدا

    And sees the taste refined and civilized

    And sees gentleness, how it harbors destruction

  13. قد طويتُ الزمان عصراً فعصراً

    وملأت الزمان عزا وجودا

    I spanned ages, one after another

    And filled the ages with glory and existence

  14. وتفردَّت بالبلاغة حتى

    رفعَ العُجمُ في الرُّبى لي بُنودا

    I singularized myself in rhetoric until

    The non-Arabs in the lands raised codes for me

  15. عجزَ الناسُ عن لحاقِ غُباري

    وتجاوزت في السباق الحدودا

    People despaired of catching up with my dust

    And I surpassed in the race all boundaries

  16. إنَّ حفظ الذمام قد بات عندي

    سُنَّة لا أُطيقُ عنها مَحيدا

    Protecting the blameless is now for me

    A tradition I cannot bear to breach

  17. أيُّ عهدٍ قطعتهُ كان منه

    حولَ عُنقي القيودُ تعلو القُيودا

    What pact did I make that brought

    Shackles piling upon my neck

  18. وإذا ما وعدتُ انجزت وعدي

    وكثيرون ينكثون العهودا

    And if I make a promise I fulfil my word

    While many break their vows

  19. أنَّ نفسي تطيب إِن يقضِ يوماً

    في سبيل الوفا وحيدي شهيدا

    My soul is pleased if one day

    Is spent in loyalty though I become a martyr alone

  20. والمعالي تطيب إِن يقضِ يوماً

    هيَ كانت على كمالي شُهودا

    And the high aspirations are pleased if one day

    Bore witness to my perfection

  21. نخرةٌ في حَماسةٍ في إِباءٍ

    لا ترى في الحلى لهنَّ نديدا

    A cleft in courage, in defiance

    You will not see among ornaments its equal

  22. وجِواري للخائفين ملاذٌ

    يجعلُ المحتمي به صنديدا

    And my damsels are a refuge for the fearful

    That makes those who seek protection invincible

  23. كيف أَخشى العدى وحوليَ سورٌ

    من قلوبٍ بها أَفلُّ الحديدا

    How can I fear enemies and around me is a fence

    Made of hearts that dissolve iron

  24. كيف اخشى غارات ريب الليالي

    وامامي لبنان يُدمي الأُسودا

    How can I fear nightly raids of suspicion

    And before me Lebanon that bloody the lions

  25. كيف اخشى ذُبولَ روضي وعندي

    منهلٌ طابَ مصدراً وورودا

    How can I fear the withering of my meadow and I have

    A spring whose stream and flowers are pure

  26. معهدٌ قد لقيتُ في جانبيه

    عَطفَ أُمٍ على الوليدِ وحيدا

    An academy I found by my side

    The affection of a mother to her only child

  27. يُرضعُ النشءَ من ثدَيَّ حليباً

    فيشبُّ الفتى حُساماً حديدا

    It suckles the youth at the breast of milk

    So the young man grows, a sword of steel

  28. يا بني العُربِ عزّزوني فتحيوا

    أَذيعوا في الأرض ذكري الحميدا

    O sons of the Arabs honor me so you may live

    Propagate in the land my praiseworthy mention

  29. وانشروا في الملا مآثر قومي

    وتحدوا بالمكرمات الجدودا

    And spread among the nobles the feats of my people

    And vie in glorious deeds of old

  30. كانت العربُ في الخيام ملوكاً

    أتكونون في القصورِ عبيدا

    The Arabs in tents were kings

    Will you be slaves in palaces?

  31. كانت العُربُ ارحبَ الناس صدراً

    ولدى الضَّيم اصلبَ الناس عُودا

    The Arabs were most clement of people

    And when wronged, firmest of people in purpose

  32. لا يرونَ الوفاقَ إلا نعيماً

    ويرونَ الشقاقَ خطباً شديدا

    They see only harmony as bliss

    And conflict as most grave adversity

  33. فانبذوا منكمُ التنافر حتى

    تجعلوا العزَّ في البلاد وطيدا

    So banish discord among you so that

    You make glory in the countries firm

  34. وتباروا في ما يُفيدُ فلاحاً

    وابذلوا في العلوم جهداً جهيدا

    And compete in what benefits success

    And exert utmost effort in knowledge

  35. انما الشَّرقُ في الجهالة عبدٌ

    فارفعوهُ بالعلم حتى يسودا

    The Orient is only a slave in ignorance

    So elevate it through learning until it rules
