Welcome to the nightingale, singing in delight,
Upon the bough of grace, captivating hearts.
Melodies that sweep all cares from the breast,
And banish anguish from the heart.
The nightingale’s song is nothing but wine,
Stealing softly through the veins.
The child is but a bulbul singing,
Within his haven silencing the nightingale.
The child is but a flower that fills the eye
With beauty and the soul with fragrance.
The child is but a star that clothes the meadow
In a fresh mantle of splendor.
How lovely the child when he gambols like a gazelle,
Amid the herd of does, bounding and leaping.
How lovely the child when he grows eager,
Seeking lofty aims and winning knowledge.
How lovely the child when he becomes a youth,
Armed with resolve that subdues every hardship.
How lovely the child as a sober, mature man,
His judgment piercing like a meteor.
How lovely the child as a dignified old man,
Whose thought unveils the unseen.
Sing on, bulbul of the gardens!
Around you are those who hear and answer.
When you warble, every breast becomes your bough;
Move from breast to breast, beloved.
Delight in the love of a tender mother
Who longs to see you a noble son.
Sip your father’s tenderness like pure water,
And graze in his rich pasture of affection.
Be as coy as you please—the heart is captured
By a charm that works like melting magic.
You are your parents’ delight and consolation;
Blessed is the share of delight found in sons.
Life’s autumn turns to spring
When you grow supple-limbed and fresh.
A gentle angel are you in the cradle;
For love of you, even the stranger recites a nasīb.
When silent, you captivate our minds;
When you speak, you baffle the orator.
Many a little mouth your smile has jeweled,
A wondrous conduit of electricity.
Many a tear you have scattered like pearls,
Yet it kindled fire within our breasts.
Your tender babbling can heal
An illness that baffles the skilled physician.
You know nothing of what life is, or its secrets,
As you sing in delight.
How often we have seen you singing in the haven,
Then, after the song, heard sobbing.
Did hopes appear before your eyes,
Brimming full, and did you plunge among them playfully?
Or did you see calamities rising like mountains
Above humanity’s heads, and fear those calamities?
Or did you see life appear like the sun,
Then draw toward sunset at evening?
Or did you know the world as a house of exile
And hate to dwell in it a stranger?
Or did you see blood flowing in seas
Since man became a wolf in battle?
Did you then reject life among beasts,
Among tyrants who will have nothing but war?
Every one of them claims pure civilization,
Yet each remains mounted for war.
What war was ever as ill-omened as this?
Never before it did we see the beardless young turn gray.
Fear no calamity, little one,
If you guard yourself in life against faults.
Life’s misery comes only from the person
Who lives disgraced among humankind.
Whoever grows accustomed to vice becomes,
In the race toward the heights, faint-hearted and afraid.
Whoever perpetrates massacres will find
His Lord forever angry with him.
Live at peace with people and shun every evil;
The rain of happiness will keep pouring upon you.
Do good as long as you live, and avoid
Everything that casts sins upon you.
For whoever sows affliction among a people
Secure in their fold will reap chastisement.
People may think that he lives in bliss,
While beneath his ribs he burns in flame.
But whoever spends his days honorably
Is a star upon the earth that will never set.
He lives through remembrance, and remembrance endures
In history’s heart like musk and fragrance.
There is your father, al-Faḍḍāl, living in honor,
Having won an awe-inspiring station among humanity.
The hearts enthroned him there as an emir
When generosity called and he answered.
Emulate his virtue, and you will live in ease,
And see happiness grow in your hands.
Enjoy your mother’s affection, and luxuriate
In tenderness that makes you forget even milk.
O child, become a youth of genius,
And live esteemed within your cherished homeland.
Fill history with glory and pride,
And spread your noble traces through it like perfumes.
Prodigies like you have lived upon the earth;
May your allotted portion be more exalted still.
You came as your parents’ firstborn, and they tasted
Many kinds of this life’s delights.
Tomorrow you will become the hoped-for man of letters
Among a people who deify the man of letters.
