أيها القائد الكبير الخطيرُ

أَنت للسيف من صِباك سميرُ

O great leader, formidable and dangerous,

You are like a polished sword from bladework.

أَقسم السيفُ أَن يكون أميراً

إِن نضاهُ على عِداهُ الأمير

The sword swears to become prince,

If you sharpen it against its enemy the prince.

سر بجو العلى إلى حيث تهوى

فالمعالي تسيرُ حيث تسير

Go with the spirit of loftiness wherever you wish,

For great deeds go wherever you go.

ولك القلبُ أَينما كنت برجٌ

ولك الصَّدرُ منبرٌ وسرير

And you own the heart wherever you are, a tower,

And you own the chest, a pulpit and bed.

كنتَ في الحرب آية البأس حتى

هابكَ القرنُ وهو ليثٌ هصور

You were in war an example of might, until

The age revered you though a ferocious lion.

فسحقتَ الجيوشَ تلوَ جيوشٍ

وغدت تحتك الرَّواسي تمور

So you crushed armies after armies,

And under you the deserts seethe.

وحُصونٍ في رمسَ قامت جِبالاً

شاهقاتٍ تهابهُنَّ النُّسور

And fortresses standing like mountains,

Looming, feared by the eagles.

ما حمتها صحائفٌ من حديدٍ

بل حمتها من الجنود الصُّدور

No sheets of steel protected them,

But the soldiers’ chests protected them.

قلبُ غورو والموتُ عذبٌ لديه

يومَ يدعو إلى الجهاد النفير

Gouro’s heart is tortured and death is sweet to him

On the day he calls to mobilize and rally.

حمَّس الجند في المعارك حتى

باتَ كلٌّ إلى المنون يطيرُ

He inspired the soldiers in battle until

Each was flying towards death.

ما بناهُ الأَلمان في نصف قرن

زعزعتهُ من أسه كفُّ غورو

What the Germans built in half a century

Gouro shook from its foundations.

هي خطت والنصر طوعٌ لما خط

طت وربُّ النصر العزيزُ القدير

You planned and victory obeys what you planned,

And the Lord of Victory is the Almighty.

مَن عليه عوَّلت في كلّ خطبٍ

مستجيراً به ونعمَ المجير

Whoever you relied upon in times of distress,

Seeking refuge in Him - what an excellent refuge!

أيها البوش لا توحوا فهذي

شيمةُ الدهر والحظوظُ تدور

O Bush, be not arrogant, for this is

The way of fate, and luck revolves.

قد سكرتم عُجباً وتهتم دلالاً

فانظروا اليومَ كيف كان المصير

You were drunk on conceit and lost in illusion,

So look today how the end was.

كنتمُ سادةً فصرتم عبيداً

وعقابُ الشعب العتي النيرُ

You were masters, but became slaves,

And the punishment of the mighty people is harsh.

يومَ طارت يمينُ غورو ترنَّح

تم سروراً وهل يليق السرور

When Gouro’s right hand took off in triumph,

It rejoiced, though rejoicing is not proper.

كان ذا منكم غروراً وما يعل

ق إلا بالأَغبياءِ الغرور

That was out of arrogance from you, and nothing

Concerns the arrogant except arrogance.

إنَّ يمناهُ ان تطر يبقَ فيه

قلبُ ليثٍ على الليوث يُغير

Indeed if his right hand takes off, there remains in him

The heart of a lion, stirring against the lions.

أَوَ ما فيه همَّةٌ لا تسامى

أوَ ما فيه عزمةٌ لا تخور

Or ambition that does not cease,

Or resolve that does not weaken.

كانتِ الحرب بالسلاح فأَمست

حرب فنٍ يفوز فيها الخبير

War used to be by weapons, but it became

A skill’s war, won by the expert.

جئت غورو لبنان والأمنُ فيه

ضائعٌ والبلاءُ طامٍ غزير

You came, Gouro, and security in Lebanon is

Lost, and affliction is abundant.

جئت لبنانَ والعيونُ دوامٍ

وفؤادُ الفقير فيه كسير

You came to Lebanon while the eyes are shedding

Tears, and the heart of the poor is broken.

فتدارك حشاشةً في بنيه

قبلَ أَن ينزل البلاءُ الكبير

So remedy the woes among your sons,

Before major affliction comes down.

إنَّ جيراننا استطالوا علينا

فصبرنا ولم يَرُعنا الزَّئيرُ

Our neighbors have been unjust to us,

But we were patient and not deterred by hostility.

وربضنا حولَ العرين أُسوداً

ووقفنا والقلبُ فينا يفورُ

And we crouched around the den as lions,

And stood while our hearts raged within.

كيف نُغضي على الهوان وفينا

كلُّ حُرٍ به العدى تستجير

How can we accept humiliation when inside us

Is every free man who seeks protection?

نحن قومٌ إلى الضَّياغمِ نُعزى

لم يهُلنا شرُّ العِدى الُمستطير

We are a people who glory in adversities,

Not deterred by the evils of enemies swarming.

نحنُ لولا حبُّ السلامِ لَطِرنا

مثلما كنا للحروبِ نطير

If not for our love of peace, we would have flown

As we flew to wars.

نحن لولا هيامُنا بفرنسا

لجهلنا وما علينا نَكير

If not for our fascination with France,

We would not have suffered ignorance or shame.

إِنَّ في صَدرنا نُفوساً كباراً

كلُّ خطبٍ في مُقلتيها صغير

In our chests are great souls,

Every misfortune to them is small.

فاذخرنا لحادثاتِ الليالي

فابنُ لبنانَ في الوغى مشهور

So prepare us for the tribulations of nights,

For Lebanon's son in turmoil is renowned.

يا أبا الخرمِ عالجِ الداءَ فينا

إِنَّ داءَ الشقاقِ داءٌ مُبير

O father of ruins, cure the malady in us,

The malady of division is ruinous.

فرَّقَ التُركُ بيننا من قُرونٍ

فغدونا والغِلُّ فينا يَثور

The Turks divided us for centuries,

So we became while rancor boiled in us.

إِن عينَ السماءِ ترعاكَ يقظى

وقلوبَ الأعوانِ حولك سورُ

The eye of heaven watches over you wakefully,

And the hearts of allies surround you like a fence.
