يا ليلةً جمعتْنا بعد طولِ نوًى
ذكراكِ هاجتْ لنا الأشجانَ ألوانا
O night that reunited us after prolonged yearning
Thoughts of you stirred many shades of melancholy in us
ذكرتُ ما كان من عرس جلوتِ بهِ
عليّ أكرمَ خلقِ اللهِ إنسانا
I remembered what had happened at the wedding feast
Where the most generous of God's creations honored me
بيضاءُ هيفاء تحكي الصبحَ مُؤتلقاً
والروضَ متَّسِقاً، والبانَ ريّانا
A white radiant night that portrays the dawn glittering
And the meadow well-watered, and the slopes lush
بتْنا تُضيء ظلامَ الليل بسمتُنا
وتستثير شجونَ الليل نجوانا
We stayed lighting up the darkness of night with our smiles
And stirring up the passions of night with our melodies
قالتْ وقلتُ، فلم تفرغ مقالتُنا
إلى الصباح، ولم تهدأ شكاوانا
She spoke and I spoke, our conversation unending
Till morn, our complaints unsettled
وحولَنا الليلُ يطوي في غلائلهِ
وتحت أعطافِه نشوى ونشوانا
And night enveloped us in its coils
Under its wings we delighted in intimacy and merriment
فما رأى قبلَنا إلفين قد فَنِيا
وَجْداً، وذابا تباريحاً وتَحنانا
None before us have been so affectionate
So fervently in love and tender
نكاد من بهجة اللقيا وروعتها
نرى الدُّنا أيكةً، والدهرَ بُستانا
From the rapture of meeting and its intensity
We see life as a paradise and time as a garden
ونحسبُ الكونَ عشَّ اثنين يجمعنا
والماءَ صهباءَ، والأنسامَ ألحانا
We imagine the universe a nest for two that joins us
The water silvern, the breeze tuneful
والعمرَ وصلاً، وآمالاً مُذلَّلةً
والغيبَ مُؤتلقَ الآفاقِ مُزدانا
Life everlasting, hopes pampered
The unknown horizons decked out and glittering
لم نعتنق وذهولُ العرسِ يغمرنا
وكم تَعانقَ روحانا وقلبانا
We did not embrace as the rapture of the nuptials overwhelmed us
How our souls and hearts embraced
ثم انثنينا وما زال الغليلُ لظًى
والوجدُ مُحتدِماً، والشوقُ ظمآنا
Then we withdrew though ardour still burnt fierce
Passion blazing and yearning thirsty
يا ليلةً شبَّتِ الذكرى بعودتها
في دورة العام، ماذا هجتِ لي الآنا!؟
O night that awakened memories with your return
On the wheel of time, what sorrows do you stir in me now!?
قد كنتِ في ما مضى أُنساً نطيب بهِ
نفساً، فأمسيتِ أوصاباً وأشجانا
You were once sweet company we savored
And now you are regrets and melancholy
أضنيتِ أسوانَ ما ترقا مدامعُهُ
وهجتِ فوق حشايا السُّهد حيرانا
You have saddened those whose tears once flowed
And confounded above the ashes of the hearth, lost
يبيت يُودع سمعَ الليل عاطفةً
ضاق النهارُ بها سِتراً وكتمانا
He spends the night confiding his emotions to the dark
Too confined and secretive for daylight
ويُرسل الشجوَ في سِرّ الدجى حُرَقاً
لو الدجى قُدَّ من صخر إذاً لانا
Sending his passion covertly under cover of night
That could melt rock, if rock it was!
وأدمعاً من حنايا القلبِ ساكبةً
قد يدمع القلب دون العينِ أحيانا
With tears pouring from the heart's wounds
A heart may weep without the eyes sometimes
