1. رفَّتِ الأرضُ حولَها والسماءُ

    وتناهَى لها السَّنا والسناءُ

    The earth sprawled around it and the sky,

    And senility and glory came to it.

  2. وزكا عندها الهدى، فهي للكو

    نِ جمالٌ، ورحمةٌ، وإخاء

    And guidance was purified by it, so it is for people,

    Beauty, mercy and brotherhood.

  3. قفْ ببطحائها قُبالةَ بيت الـ

    لهِ واخشعْ فإنها البطحاء

    Stand in its plains facing the House of

    God and be humble for it is Al-Baṭḥā’.

  4. باركَ الله حولها واجتباها

    فزكَتْ في صعيدها الأنبياء

    God blessed its surroundings and chose it

    Thus, the prophets were purified in its valley.

  5. الذبيحُ الكريم، والذابحُ السَّمـ

    ـحُ حنيفٌ، نمتْهُما حُنَفاء

    The noble sacrificed and the lenient slaughterer,

    Hanif raised them, they grew up hanifs.

  6. رفعا بَيْتَها العتيقَ على التقـ

    ـوى فعزَّ الباني، وطال البناء

    They raised its ancient House on piety

    So the builder became mighty and the building lasted.

  7. قُدُسٌ تُشْرَعُ الوجوهُ إليهِ

    ما تراءى صبحٌ، وقامت عِشاء

    Holy, faces turn to it,

    As long as the dawn appears and night falls.

  8. وترامَى له الحجيجُ وهم لِلْـ

    أَيْنِ نَهْبٌ، وللسُّرَى أنضاء

    And pilgrims come to it while they are for the

    Idols, looting, and for monasteries, chaste.

  9. أنفسٌ لليقين ظمأَى فما تبـ

    ـلغ حتى ينجابَ ذاك الظَّماء

    Souls thirsty for certainty so they do not

    Quench until that thirst is quenched.

  10. وقلوبٌ للنور تهفو فما تُشْـ

    ـرفُ، إلا ونورها لألاء

    And hearts longing for light but are not

    Satisfied, except by its illumination.

  11. قلتُ للنفس وهْيَ نهب الأحاسي

    س تَنَزَّى، وتَغْتلي ما تشاء

    I said to the soul as it loots feelings,

    "Be pure and take what you wish."

  12. رهْبةٌ عند روعةٍ يتساوَى

    عندها الأَيِّدون والضعفاء

    Reverence in the face of awe, in which

    The powerful and the weak are equal.

  13. إيهِ يا نفسُ إن تاريخ هذا الـ

    ـكونِ ضمَّتْه هذه الأنقاء

    O soul, the history of this

    Universe contains this purity.

  14. يا شفيعَ الأنام ما شفع الحَقْـ

    ـقُ لديهم، ولا أعان الولاء

    O intercessor of people, what interceded with them is not

    Right, nor did loyalty help.

  15. وكأني أراك في ظُلَلِ الحا

    ئطِ تشكو فترجفُ الأرجاء

    It is as if I see you in the shadows of the wall

    Complaining, so the expanses tremble.

  16. في مناجاتك الظميَّةِ للّـ

    ـهِ معانٍ قدسيَّةٌ عصماء

    In your plaintive whispering to

    God, sanctified, protected meanings.

  17. صَغُرتْ عندك الشدائدُ ما حفْ

    فَكَ من ربك الكريم احتفاء

    Difficulties seemed small to you, with what

    Honor your Generous Lord surrounded you.

  18. واذكرِ الهجرة التي جلَّل الدهْـ

    ـرَ سناها المباركُ الوضَّاء

    And remember the emigration which time

    Adorned with its blessed, pouring radiance.

  19. دفع الضعفُ، والهوان إليها

    والسياسات، والحجا، والدهاء

    Weakness and disgrace prompted it,

    As well as politics, pilgrimage and cunning.

  20. خرجا يضربان في عَتْمة الليـ

    ـلِ، ثبيرٌ يفَدِّيهما وكُداء

    They went out striking in the darkness of the night,

    A young camel carrying them and an old camel.

  21. فاسألِ الغار كيف ضمَّ الطريديـ

    ـنِ، وأخفَى، وهل لشمسٍ خَفَاء؟

    So ask the cave how it accommodated the two fugitives,

    And concealed them, does the sun have concealment?

  22. ثانيَ اثنين فيه ربُّهما الثا

    لثُ، فهْوَ الملاذ، وهْوَ الوِقاء

    Two of two while their third Lord is with them,

    So He is their refuge and protection.

  23. فصلا عنه والحِذار زميلٌ

    لَهُما والمهامِه الجرداء

    Caution was their companion,

    And the bare highlands.

  24. كلما كلَّتِ المطايا من الإغـ

    ـذاذِ صاحا: إن النجاة النجاء

    Whenever the riding beasts slowed down from fatigue,

    He cried: “Deliverance is only in deliverance.”

  25. فإذا يثربُ الحفيَّة دارٌ

    وإذا النصر عندها والولاء

    And then Yathrib, the trench-dweller, was a home,

    And victory was theirs, and loyalty.

  26. واذكرِ الفتح كيف قرَّبه الدِّيـ

    ـنُ، وعزَّ الأنصار والحُنَفاء

    And remember the conquest, how religion brought it near,

    The Helpers gained glory and the Hanifs.

  27. مهبطَ الوحْيِ هل إليك مآبٌ

    وإلى بيتك العتيق انثناء

    O you harbour of revelation, is there a returning

    To you and your ancient House?

  28. لو تراخت بنا الحياة رجعنا

    وهدانا لك الهوى والوفاء

    If life had been lenient with us, we would have returned

    And love and loyalty guided us to you.

  29. فسلامٌ عليك في حَرَم الخُلْـ

    ـدِ، وسِلْمٌ ورحمةٌ وثناء

    So peace be upon you in the Abode of Eternity,

    And safety, mercy and praise.

  30. وردتْكِ النفوسُ وهْيَ ظِماءٌ

    فارتوتْ وانثنت وهُنَّ ظماء

    Souls returned to you thirsty

    So they were quenched, bent down, and were thirsty.
