O nights in seclusion, I find no comfort in you

Despite what you've brought of disquiet

It's as if what was gone from us, we did not see

Or we were given death's cup, brought near

    So return O safe ghosts

Do not persist in misguidance, quick to pursue

The specter does not haunt the reminiscent longing one

And longing is the mark of lovers true

O my home that I've loved, and O my soul

What I have stored of binding ropes

O my loved ones in my far-reaching horizons

    And my extended, extended vistas

May God guide your steps in life

And suffice you from stumbling's pitfalls

And protect you, and weigh you with

Enduring, noble traits, enduring through the nights

Our awaited day! You were blessed a day

You are in our Lord's knowledge, the Creator

The loved ones meet in your loved horizon

And are healed from burning longing

She is in the abundance of eternity, my companion

    Who sang with delicate memories

She softened in the space of my Lord, wandering

    Still loving the meadows

We have taken off life's dress, faded

And drank the heritage in a bitter cup

And awoke while dawn was gloomy

And darkness stifling, the depths obscured

The soul grew weary of its vigil and hated it

And my waking from its worries and preoccupations

So when will I rest from its heavy burden

And be saved from its brilliant magic?

O life's setting, you made me forget the light

    And excluded me from radiance

    And erased existence except traces

Bound by the hand of ruin in a contract

It spoke the clear truth from the decisive saying

And poured out its mysterious secret

And fell, no calamities can divert it

Nor does it desire the lofty imagination

Our days have announced their passing

And we broke free of their strangling bond

Death has freed us from its arduous captivity

And what it contained of servitude

What is my benefit from the full moon if

My crescent is clay of ruin and erasure?

Many a night the heart elongated with light

And a night for which you loosened the stars

Without you I am but yearning and wakefulness

I do not fear my vigil nor our separation

Between a heart intensely loving the loved ones

And a specter traversing the horizon

That is my way, you essence of the soul and heart

    And those are my morals

So if I am gone, the return is near

    For the tortured, restless lover

Bid farewell to companions, O fallen to calamities

For the parting of loved ones cannot be borne

And prepare, for you are but a shuddering shadow

    Shifting and speeding away

The lamps do not frighten the individual

    Nor overtakes the racer

Every branch leads to decay and withering

Like a demolished inscription, borders erased

How can the doves free me from my people

When the doves do not make me accustomed?

I am in the grip of God! And how much

I praise my humility and love my bond

So be gone, O life, completely gone

And cast me from your pitch-black night

And take what led me and pulled me

To the lands of poverty and deprivation

The soul longs to be saved from captivity

And yearns for the fulfilling refuge

So when, I wonder, will my release be done?

And when, I wonder, will my emancipation come?

I waver between death and life, and my vigil wearies me

    While sinking pleases me

O poison we enjoy, and illness

That the afflicted drinks as an antidote

No healing hovers around my deathbed

And hardship bitter has taken me by the throat

    From a frightened, fluttering heart

The cups of passion are drained, and glad tidings have faded

    Parting looms behind embrace

The horses of youth are stripped of intimacy

So treat generously those you held dear

And I have folded up youth in the parchment of age

And bade it farewell with a shedding tear

Sleep now, O life, in your groaning cave

And in your lasting, abandoned cradle
