1. رجاُّكَ أن تعيشَ بلا زَوَالِ

    كَمَنْ يرجُو ارتِوا من ماءِ آلِ

    You wish to live without decline

    Like one who hopes to quench thirst from mirage water

  2. تَرومُ المستحيلَ ولا تَراهُ

    ولو أَنفقْتَ عمرك بالسؤالِ

    You seek the impossible but do not see it

    Even if you spent your life asking

  3. فتبني بيتَ عزّك مِن رجاءٍ

    ولكنَّ الأساسَ على رمالِ

    So you build the house of your dignity out of hope

    But the foundation is on sand

  4. وتبغي العيشَ في الدنيا طويلاً

    وهل حيٌّ يكون بلا زَوالِ

    And you want a long life in this world

    Yet which living being is without decline?

  5. خُلِقنا للفناء فما رجانا

    بِدُنيا العمرٌ فيها كالخيالِ

    We were created for death, so do not be misled

    The life of this world is like a mirage

  6. حياةٌ صفْها كَدَرٌ وطينٌ

    تعُود بنا إليها بالمُحَالِ

    A life whose description is misery and mire

    That always takes us back to it

  7. أذا حسُنَتْ فواتِحُها لَدَينا

    فإِنَّ بها الختامَ ردى المآلِ

    If its beginnings were good for us

    Its outcome has surely led to ruin

  8. هي الدُّنيا تقولُ بملءِ فيها

    حذَارِ حذَار مِني فِي فِعالي

    This world says with all its commotion

    Beware, beware of me and my deeds

  9. فلا يغرُرْكُمُ منّي ابِتسامٌ

    فإن الليثَ يَبسِمُ في القتالِ

    So do not be fooled by my smiles

    For even the lion smiles in fighting

  10. وقَولي مُضحِكٌ والفِعْلُ مُبكٍ

    فما سيانِ فِعلي معْ مَقالي

    My words amuse while my actions make one cry

    So my actions and words are not the same

  11. حياةٌ يا ابنَ آدَم أَنتَ فيها

    غريبٌ قد عزَمتَ على ارتحالِ

    O son of Adam, the life you live

    Is that of a stranger determined to leave

  12. ترى بخلالها فَرَحاُ وأُنساً

    ولستَ ترى الذي خَلْفَ الخِلالِ

    You see in it joy and company

    But do not see what is behind the scenes

  13. كَرَقْطاءٍ تَلين لِكلّ لَمسٍ

    وتحتَ النابِ تحنش في الوبالِ

    Like a chameleon that changes with every touch

    And under fangs lies in wait to pounce

  14. أَتفكرُ إن لبِست الخَزَّ فيها

    غَدَوت مُنعَّماً في حُسنِ حالِ

    Do you think that if dressed in fine garments

    You have become prosperous and in good state?

  15. قكم قد أَنْزَلتْ مَلِكاً بقبرٍ

    وكان بعرش مجدٍ فيه عالِ

    It has made kings reside in graves

    While once they reigned loftily on high

  16. فلا تعقِد بها أملاً وعلّق

    رَجاءَك بالإله أخي الكمالِ

    So do not hold high hopes in it

    And hang your hopes in God, O you of perfection

  17. تزوَّد من تُقى الرَّحْمن زاداً

    فأَنت مسافرٌ في كل حالِ

    Take provision of piety from the Merciful

    For you are a traveler in every state

  18. ولا تَتْرُك وراءَك غيرَ ذكرٍ

    كعَرْف الطيب فاحَ من الشمالِ

    And leave behind you only remembrance

    Like the lingering perfume wafting from the north

  19. إِذا بَلِيَ الفتى في الأرض يَوماً

    فَإِنَّ الذكرَ يُحيي غيرَ بالِ

    When a youth grows distressed on earth one day

    Remembrance will enliven his non-existent mind

  20. سقى جَدَثاً لقد ضم التُّقى والنّ

    قا ربّي بِوَدْقٍ ذِي انهمالِ

    It has watered a grave that now holds piety and traits

    My Lord has lodged him in a heavy downpour

  21. على ذاك الذي قَدْ غابَ فيه

    سلامُ الله ما جَنّت ليالِ

    Peace be upon him in whom

    Nights have never harmed or wronged

  22. ويا رَمْساً ثَواه خيرُ حَبر

    عَمَنْ صبحاً بمحمود الخصالِ

    And O tomb sheltering the best of men

    Of the most praised traits in the morn

  23. ويا صخرَ الصلاح انعِمْ صباحاً

    بِلُقيا اللهِ ربّك ذِي الجلالِ

    O rock of righteousness, enjoy in the morn

    The meeting of God, your Glorious Lord

  24. لئن فقدَتْ بك الأقطارُ فرداً

    لقد فاقَ الأَواخرَ والأوالي

    If the regions have lost you as an individual

    You have surpassed the first and the last generations

  25. فقد فرِحت ملائكةُ السما في

    لقاكَ بُعيدَ آمالِ الوِصالِ

    So the angels of heaven rejoiced

    When meeting you, beyond wished reunions

  26. مصائِبُنا فوائدُ مَنْ سوانا

    كذاك الدهرُ في العُصُر الخوالي

    Our afflictions have benefited whoever assailed us

    Such is time, in eras and ages

  27. بكاك القطُر لكن مثل قَطر

    وما استويا بهاتيكَ الفِعالِ

    The rain drop laments you but is not

    Equal to you in those great deeds

  28. إذا سحًّ القطُر يفيد أرضاً

    ولسيس بنافع دمع الرجالِ

    When the drop descends it benefits land

    But the tears of men are of no avail

  29. ألا يا صخرةَ الإيمانِ هَلاّ

    تعودُ ولو على حكم ارتحالِ

    O rock of faith, why not

    Return, even if traveling is ordained?

  30. تَرى أن الكنائس ما تراءت

    وكانت فيك بطرس كالجبالِ

    You see the churches appear

    When through you they became like mountains

  31. ترى الفقراء تلتطم افتقاراً

    لحَبْرٍ كان غيثاً في النوالِ

    You see the poor slammed against

    Destitution, for a priest who was as rain in days of ease

  32. إذا مَحلتْ رُبى العَلياء حُزناً

    فبستانيُّها إلْفُ اعتقالِ

    When the aromatic plants of loftiness sorrow

    Its blossoms are the most strictly imprisoned

  33. أمصرعُه ببيتِ الدين يومَ

    الخميسِ وقد تولى للزوالِ

    He died in the home of faith on

    Thursday as it approached its end

  34. بكاهُ الناسُ من قاصٍ ودَانٍ

    بُكاءً كالسَّحاب ولا أُغالي

    People wept for him from near and far

    Weeping like clouds and I do not exaggerate

  35. ويومَ الجمعةِ التالي رأَينا

    ثَبيراً في البحار على الرِجالِ

    And on the next Friday we saw

    Him adrift at sea holding on to men

  36. سروا فيه وحولَيه شهِدنا

    الجيوش أسً منكَّسةَ النصالِ

    They walked around him and we witnessed

    Armies with lances bowed around him

  37. أَتوا فيه المصلًّى فالتقتْهُ

    ملائكةُ السما في حُسنِ حالِ

    They came to him at the prayer place so

    The angels of heaven met him in good state

  38. أبيتَ الدين قد واريتَ شخصاً

    ببيتِ الدين كم أمضى ليالي

    O abode of faith you have covered a person

    Who spent many nights in you

  39. سقاك العفوُ يا رمساً حواه

    ففيك لقد ثوى خيرُ الموالي

    Quench your thirst, O tomb sheltering

    The best of friends and protectors

  40. لقد حقَّقْت يا ربًّ المعالي

    بفقْدِك فقدَ كلّ أخي كمالِ

    You have realized, O Lord of Highness

    By losing you we lose all perfection

  41. وقد صدَّقتُ أَنَّ الأرض مثوى

    غداة ثويت فيها للهلالِ

    And I believe the earth to be an abode

    The morning you were lain down as a crescent

  42. ثويتَ وكلُّ روضٍ وَدَّ لَوْ أن

    تكونَ به فيحظى بالجَلالِ

    You were laid to rest and if any garden

    Were your place it would pride with glory

  43. فلا عجبٌ إذا واراك رَمسٌ

    فبالأَصدافِ وُجدانُ اللآلي

    So it is no wonder that seashells cover you

    For within shells, pearls are found
