1. رقد السيفُ واستراح الأعادي

    يا نصيرَ الشعوب أدرِكْ بلادي

    The sword rested and the enemies relaxed,

    Oh supporter of nations, save my country,

  2. عَبثاً تُطلِقُ العبادَ من الأسر

    وتُبقي في الأسر بعضَ العبادِ

    In vain you liberate some slaves

    While you keep others in bondage,

  3. إنَّ شعباً تريدُه لحياةٍ

    غيرُ شعبٍ يَحيا بالاستعبادِ

    A nation you want for life

    Is not like a nation that lives in servitude,

  4. المبادِي التي وَضَعْتَ أساساً

    لحياةِ الشعوب نِعم المبادي

    The principles you laid down

    As basis for the life of nations are good principles,

  5. سعَروها حَرباً ضروساَ فشبَّت

    تتلظّى كالنارِ ذاتِ اتّقادِ

    They ignited a fierce war that blazed

    Like a fiery flame,

  6. في رؤوسِ الجبال يوماَ وتحتَ

    الأرضِ طَوراً وتارةً في الوهادِ

    At mountain peaks one day, and underneath

    The earth at times, and sometimes in the valleys,

  7. وهي فوقَ المياه حيناً وتحتَ

    الماء آناً وفوق متنِ الغوادي

    And above the waters once, and below

    The water at times, and atop the dunes,

  8. فإذا الجوُّ قاتمٌ وإذا البَرًّ

    عبوسٌ والبحرُ في إزبادِ

    So the weather is gloomy, and the land

    Is bleak, and the sea rages,

  9. أمم ترتمي على أممِ أُخرى

    وجندٌ يمشي إلى أجنادِ

    Nations fall upon other nations

    And armies march against armies,

  10. كمن الموتُ للنفوس فأيّان

    تردَّهُ تجدْهُ بالمرصادِ

    Death for the souls, so where

    Can it be repelled? It lies in ambush,

  11. في فِرِند الحسامِ أو في فمِ المدفع

    فوق الربى وبطن الوادي

    In the edge of the sword, or in the mouth of a cannon

    Over ruins and in the belly of the valley,

  12. تحت جنح الدّجى وفي وضَح الصبح

    وحين الإبراق والإرعادِ

    Under the wing of darkness, at dawn

    And when lightning and thunder strike,

  13. قيل هذا يومُ الشعوب فلمَّا

    شَمَل الأرضَ قيلَ يوم المعادِ

    They said this is the day of nations, but when

    It engulfed the earth, they said it's doomsday,

  14. زعموها حَرْباً يُصان بها الحقُّ

    وأَخفَوا حقيقةً في الفؤادِ

    They claimed it's a war to protect truth

    And concealed the facts in their hearts,

  15. فإذا شئتَ فهي حربُ دفاعٍ

    جَرَّهُ خرقُ حرمةٍ أو حيادِ

    If you wish, it's a defensive war

    Incited by violation of sanctity and neutrality,

  16. وإذا شئت فهي حربُ بقاءٍ

    وإذا شئتَ فهي حربُ اقتصادِ

    And if you wish, it's a war of survival,

    And if you wish, it's a war of economy,

  17. سمّها ما تشاء ليست كما أَعلم

    إِلاّ مطامعَ الأسيادِ

    Call it what you want, but as I know

    It is only the greed of masters,

  18. قوةٌ تستبيحُ ضُعفاً وفردٌ

    مسترِقٌّ شعباً بالاستبدادِ

    A force that sanctions weakness, and an

    Individual who steals a nation by tyranny,

  19. ثم قالوا حقُّ الضعيف وقالوا

    بَعدَ هذا حرّيَّةُ الأفرادِ

    Then they spoke of the rights of the weak, and spoke

    After this of the freedom of individuals,

  20. هكذا تُنَثر الزهور على النعشِ

    لتُخفِي ما تحتَهُ مِن فَسادِ

    Thus flowers are strewn on the bier

    To conceal the corruption beneath,

  21. إيه غليومُ لا تموّه على الناسِ

    المعانِي فأنت بالشرّ بادِ

    Oh William, do not disguise the meanings

    For the people, you are prone to evil,

  22. عزّةُ الملك لا تكون لِجانٍ

    هو أَولَى بِذِلَّةِ الإبعادِ

    The honor of a king is not through hosts

    He is most deserving of exile,

  23. قد تُدان النفوسُ ذات شعورٍ

    لا تدان النفسُ التي من جَمَادِ

    Souls of feeling may be condemned

    But not the soul of inanimate matter,

  24. آذِني بالسلام أيّتُها الأرضُ

    فقد طال عهدُنا بالجِلادِ

    Inform me of peace, oh earth

    For long we have lived under oppression,

  25. آذِني بالصباحِ يَطْلُعْ علينا

    قد سئمنا واللهِ لونَ السوادِ

    Inform me of the morning that rises upon us

    We are weary, by God, of the color black,

  26. ولِقينا من الدواهِي الدواهي

    وأصبنا من العوادي العوادي

    And we have suffered many afflictions

    And were struck by many calamities,

  27. مرضٌ فاتكٌ وجوعٌ وعُريٌ

    وتَمَادي تعسُّفٍ واضطهادِ

    A deadly disease, hunger, nakedness

    And the arrogance of tyranny and persecution,

  28. عبثَ الموت بالنفوسِ كما

    يَعبَثُ بالزَّرْعِ مِنجلُ الحصَّادِ

    Death toys with souls as

    The reaper’s sickle toys with the crop,

  29. كلُّ هذي الشرورِ إنْ هي إلاّ

    فَتَكات الأحقادِ بالأحقادِ

    All these evils are but

    The murders of hatreds upon hatreds,

  30. أيها العالَم الجديد أماناً

    قد تمادى القديمُ في الإفسادِ

    Oh new world, grant us safety

    For the old world has exceeded in corruption,

  31. خذ بحَدّ الحُسامِ مَن لا يبالي

    حين يُدعى بالنصح والإرشادِ

    Take by the edge of the sword those

    Who do not care when called to advice and guidance,

  32. ضَعْ لهذي الحروبِ حَدّاً ولو أيَّدَتْه

    للورى ببيضٍ حدادِ

    Set a limit to these wars even if

    Whiteness of mourning supports it,

  33. يُدفَع الشر بالشرورِ اضطراراُ

    رُبًّ صلحٍ من الوغى مستفادِ

    Evil is fought by evils out of necessity

    Many times reconciliation comes from chaos,

  34. سُنَّةُ الناس في الحياة معادٌ

    جشَمته العداءَ شَرَّهُ عادِ

    People's way of life is a cycle

    Its wickedness intensifies its evil,

  35. يا نصيرَا لشعوب إن الأماني

    سبُلُ البائسينَ للإسعادِ

    Oh supporter of nations, wishes

    Are the paths of the miserable to happiness,

  36. نحن قومٌ وأنت أدرى بقومٍِ

    ناشطٍ للحياة سَهلِ المقادِ

    We are a people, and you know best of a

    Vigorous people, easy to lead,

  37. قد ركبنا البحارَ نسعى إلى المجد

    أُباة الخمولِ أَهلَ اجتهادِ

    We sailed the seas seeking glory

    Determined people loathing inertia,

  38. ونحتنا الجبالَ نحتاً فصارتْ

    منبتَ العُشب واقتحمنا البوادي

    And we carved mountains until they became

    Pastures of grass, and we penetrated the deserts,

  39. وانتجعنا الأمصارَ مِصراً فمصراً

    نقنِصُ القواتُ من فم الآسادِ

    And we cultivated settlements, one after

    Another, diminishing the dens of lions,

  40. عَمْركَ الله لا تضيّق علينا

    بَعْدَ هذا فالعيشُ عيشُ جهادِ

    May God grant you long life, do not restrict

    Us after this, for living is living by strife,

  41. وردَ القومُ كلَّ صافٍ وأَصبحنا

    على الرَّغم مَنهَلَ الورّادِ

    And the people returned, all pure, and we

    Became, despite them, the valley’s streams,

  42. أَمِنَ الناسُ في الحياةِ ضلالاً

    يومَ قالوا أنتَ الرسول الهادي

    Did people stray into misguidance

    When they said you are the guiding messenger,

  43. واتّقَوا باسمك احتكامَ قويٍّ

    بضعيفٍ وضِلّة برشادِ

    And they feared in your name the arbitration of a

    Strong one upon the weak and the lost ones by guidance,

  44. وخنوع المجموع للفرد قسراً

    وبقاءَ الأطواق في الأَجيادِ

    And the submission of the group to the individual by force

    And the shackles remaining on the necks,

  45. كان شَدُّ الوثاق في عُنُقِ الناس

    مفيداً فصار فكّ القياد

    Tightening the shackles on people’s necks

    Was useful, so their removal became detrimental,

  46. هذه الحربُ لا تقصّرْ على الناس

    مداها إن لم تفز بالمرادِ

    This war does not limit itself to people

    Its scope will not succeed if it does not achieve its goals,

  47. أتفكُّ القيود عن أُمَمِ الغرب

    وتُبقِي الشرقيّ في الأصفادِ

    Do you remove the shackles from the nations of the West

    And keep the Easterners in chains?

  48. أنا في ظلّلك المقدّس أَدعوكَ

    وعهدي ناديك كرمُ نادِ

    I am in your sacred shade, I call upon you

    And my covenant calls you, most generous of callers,

  49. أمّتي أُمّتي ونفسيَ نفسي

    فحياتي لأمتي وبلادي

    My nation, my nation and myself, myself

    So my life is for my nation and country,

  50. إن دعوتُ البيانَ لَبَّى بياني

    أو دعوت الوفا فهذا فؤادي

    If I called upon eloquence, it obeyed my eloquence

    Or if I called upon loyalty, then this is my heart,
