1. اِمنَحْ فؤادي أجنحاً فيطيرا

    وَتَرى اللسانَ لديه صار بَشيرا

    Grant my heart wings to fly

    And you will see my tongue turned into a harbinger

  2. واطلقِ يراعيَ في ثنائك بُرهةً

    يتبعْهما إذ لا يزال أسيرا

    And unleash my thoughts to roam freely in praising you

    With them following as they remain captivated

  3. حَتَمت عليَّ صفاتُك الغرّاء أَن

    أَقِفَ الزمانَ لها اللسانَ شكورا

    Your sublime qualities have destined

    That my tongue will stand still in gratitude

  4. والعارُ أن يقف الفتى شيئاً على

    مَرْءٍ ويطلبَ بعدهُ تغييرا

    It is shameful that a young man stops at

    Praising anyone and then seeks change

  5. لَستُ الأمينَ إذا نَذَرْتُ مدائحي

    وأَنَا الأمينُ إذا وَفَيتُ نُذورا

    I am not trustworthy if I vow my praises

    And I am trustworthy if I fulfill my vows

  6. أَيقَالُ عني قد نكثتُ مواعدي

    إن كنتُ أَشكو في ثَنَاك قُصورا

    Can it be said about me that I broke my promises

    If I complain of shortcomings in praising you

  7. لا لا أُلامُ إذا قَصَرتُ وَإِنما

    إن كنتُ أسكُتُ لم أَكنْ معذورا

    No, I am not blamed if I fall short, but

    If I stay silent, I would not be excused

  8. من كان تُغِرقُه السواقي كيف لا

    يشكو العَيَاءَ إذا أراد بُحُرا

    How can one who is drowned in passion not

    Complain of disability when seeking an ocean

  9. وأنا فَتَى لي في القريضِ سجيّةٌ

    خالفتُ فيها البحترٍيْ وجَريرا

    And I am a lad gifted in poetry

    Differing in it from al-Buhturi and Jarir

  10. لا أمدَح الرجلَ الكريمَ لبُغَيةٍ

    قُطِع اللسانُ إذا نطقتُ الزُّورا

    I do not praise a generous man for greed

    May the tongue be cut off if it utters lies

  11. مولايَ بعضُ القوم يُثني إِنًّما

    يَبْنِي مشارفَ في الثَّنا وقُصورا

    My Master, some people only praise

    To build facades in praise and palaces

  12. حتى يقالَِ فلانُ تُنطقه اللِّهى

    والميل نَسْقٌ في الطروسِ سطورا

    Until it is said so-and-so, may God make him eloquent

    And the inclination is a set course for the noble

  13. ولكلّ نفسٍ مأربٌ بأَمِيرِها

    تُطرِي وتَطْوي للأُمور أُمورا

    And every soul has its purpose with its leader

    Flying and folding matters into matters

  14. طَبْع الأنامِ على الهَوى فتأمّلوا

    غاياتِ من قد أحْسَنَِ التعبيرا

    The nature of people is inclination to passion so observe

    The goals of those who have done excellent expression

  15. ولربما نشر الفَتَى غيرَ الذي

    يَطوِي وقال مِنَ القيل كثيرا

    And perhaps the young man spreads other than what

    He folds and says much of speech

  16. أَمَّا أنا فالصّدق حَلْيُ قصائدي

    مَا قُلتُ شيئاً لم يكُنْ مَشْهورا

    As for me, truth is the adornment of my poems

    I have not said anything that was not famous

  17. أُثني عليكَ ولا قَرابَةَ بَينَنَا

    كَلاَّ ولستَ عليّ أَنتَ أَميرا

    I praise you though there is no kinship between us

    No, and you are not over me a prince

  18. لا أبتَغي منكَ الحَزَاءَ أَوِ النَّدى

    أَوْ أن أَراكَ ليَ الحياةَ ظَهِيرا

    I do not seek reward or help from you

    Or to see you as the supporter of my life

  19. لكنًّني أحْكِي الحقيقةَ والذي

    أُثني عليكَ بِهِ غَدَا مَنْشُورا

    But I speak the truth, and that which

    I praise you with will spread tomorrow

  20. هذي بِلادُ الشرق قد عَرَفَتْكَ مُذْ

    رَبَّتْكَ في مَهْد العَلاءِ صَغيرا

    The lands of the East have known you since

    They nurtured you as a child in the cradle of glory

  21. هذي بِلادُ الغَرْب فَضْلُكَ مُنطِقٌ

    بِثناك فيها أهلَهَا والدُّورا

    The lands of the West, your superiority is voiced

    In their praise of you, both homes and abodes

  22. يُثْنِي عليك بَنُو السيّاسةِ في الورى

    إذ كنتَ في سِرّ الأمور بصيرا

    The people of politics praise you in the world

    As you were insightful in the secret of affairs

  23. يُثْنِي عليك بنو المَعارِفِ والحِجَى

    إذ كنتَ في كلّ العلومِ خَبيرا

    The people of knowledge and wisdom praise you

    As you were an expert in every science

  24. يُثْني عَليكَ المُعدَمون لأنًّهم

    عَرَفوك غَيثاً بالعطاءِ غَزيرا

    The destitute praise you because they

    Knew you as a rain of abundant generosity

  25. يُثْنِي عليك من ابتلى في نَكبَةٍ

    إذا كنتَ في آنِ البلاءِ صَبُورا

    Those who suffered adversity praise you

    As you were patient in the time of affliction

  26. يُثْنِي عَليكَ من ذَوُو المروءةِ والوفا

    إذ كنتَ في نَجْحِ البلادِ غَيُورا

    The people of chivalry and loyalty praise you

    As you were jealous for the success of the country

  27. يُثْنِي عَليكَ ذَوُو الطَّهارةِ والتُّقَى

    إذ كنتَ بَرّاً لا تزال طَهورا

    The people of purity and piety praise you

    As you have always been virtuous and pure

  28. يُثنِي عَلَيك أُلو الغوايةِ في الورى

    إذ كنتَ بَدْراً للخُطَاةِ مُنيرا

    Those gone astray in the world praise you

    As you were an enlightening moon for sinners

  29. يُثْنِي عَلَيكَ جميعُ مَنْ عَرَفوك ما

    بينَ الوَرى للمستجيرِ مُجيرا

    All who knew you praise you

    As you have been a protector for those seeking refuge

  30. إنْ يَمدحوك فإنَّ فضلَكَ لم يَزَلْ

    في الناسِ يُنطِقُ ألْسُناً وصُخُورا

    If they praise you, your superiority has always

    Made tongues and rocks speak in people

  31. أَخشى عليَّ إذا مَدَحتُ فإنما

    تُعيي صِفاتُكَ شاعراً مَشْهُورا

    I fear for myself, if I praise, that

    Your qualities will fatigue a renowned poet

  32. إنْ كانَ في نَيْلِ الكثيرِ صُعوبةٌ

    فَعَلى الأقلّ أنالُ منه يَسيرا

    If attaining much is difficult

    At least I take from it a little

  33. فإليكَهَا غيداء عطًّرَها الثَّنا

    فَغَدتْ تُباهي المِسْكَ والكافورا

    So to you this poem, scented with praise

    Has become prouder than musk and camphor

  34. جَلَبت عليكَ ومِنْ عوائد أهلها

    أنْ لا تُميطَ عن الوجوهِ ستورا

    It came to you, and it is the habit of its people

    To not unveil faces from covers

  35. عدِمَتْ نظيراً في الجمالِ وإنها

    قد شابَهَتْكَ فقد عدِمتَِ نظيرا

    It lacked a peer in beauty, and it

    Resembled you, so it lacked a peer

  36. ولذاك قد خفّت إليك لَدُنْ رأت

    حِمْلَ النظير على النَّظير كثيرا

    And that is why it shyly approached you when it saw

    Bearing a peer upon a peer is much

  37. وَافَت تَبُثُّكَ دِخْلتي فَأْنَا فَتىً

    فِي قلبِهِ حُبَّيكَِ شَبَّ سَعِيرا

    It reached you spreading my affection

    For I am a lad in whose heart your love blazed

  38. أهواكَ يا رجلَ التواضُعِ لا أرى

    قَلبي لغيركَ في الْهَوَى مأسُورا

    I love you O man of humility, I do not see

    My heart enamored with other than you

  39. في كلّ جارحةِ هَواكَ ثَوَى لِذاً

    أهتزُّ إنْ ذَكَرُوكَ لي مسْرورا

    In every part that loves you bliss has dwelled

    So I tremble when they mention you, delighted

  40. حدًّثتُ قَلْبي في سُلُوّك سَاعةً

    قال السُّلُوُّ قَد اغتَدِي مَحظورا

    I talked to my heart privately for a while

    It said: the private conversation has become forbidden

  41. إن لُحتَ في أنسانِ عَيني لَمْحَةً

    أنْسَتْهُ طلعتُك الظِباءَ الحُورا

    If you glanced in the eyes of my beloved for a moment

    Your appearance made the gazelles ashamed

  42. فانزِل عيوني تستنرْ بِهُداك إذْ

    مِن عادةِ الأبصار تحوي النُّورا

    So may my eyes descend, enlightened by your guidance

    For it is the nature of sights to contain light
