1. خيم الليل أدجت الظلماء

    رقد الناس ماتت الضوضاء

    The night has pitched its tents, darkness prevails

    People sleep, the hubbub has died down

  2. لا حراك حتى الطبيعة نامت

    عشت يا ليل فاستطل ما تشاء

    No stir, even nature has fallen asleep

    Live O night, linger as long as you please

  3. هب إبليس من ثراه مجدا

    وله الجو قد خلا والفضاء

    Rise O Iblis from your bed in glory

    The air is empty and open space yours

  4. لبس الليل حلة ولكم شيطان

    تخفيه حلة سوداء

    Night wears a gown, but for you Satan

    A black gown conceals you

  5. نظرة إثر نظرة إثر أخرى

    فإذا الناس كلهم أغنياء

    A gaze follows another, follows another

    And people all seem wealthy

  6. وإذا النجم في الفضاء تدلى

    كقناديل نورها وضاء

    The stars in space sway

    Like lanterns, their light shining

  7. تلمح الأرض ثم يحجبها الغيم

    فمنها الظهور والاختفاء

    Earth comes into view, then is veiled by clouds

    Appearing and disappearing

  8. كرقيب أطل ثم توارى

    والدراري وسط الدجى رقباء

    Like a guard who peeks then hides

    And the watchmen midst the darkness vigilant

  9. وتمشى الشيطان غير جزوع

    فهبوط طورا وطورا علاء

    Satan walks unafraid

    Descending and ascending lofty heights

  10. وحواليه من خداع ومن كذب

    جيوش ماجت بها الظلماء

    Around him, deception and lies

    Armies swarming in the dark

  11. ثم حانت منه التفاته عين

    فرأى منزلا وفيه ضياء

    Then he glances, looks with his eye

    And sees a house lit inside

  12. زاده الموقع الطبيعي حسنا

    وحواليه روضة غناء

    Its natural site makes it more beautiful

    A garden singing around it

  13. سر إبليس مذ رآه فوافاه

    ولكن في نفسه أشياء

    Iblis crept toward it when he saw it

    But thoughts stirred in his soul

  14. وتلا آية الخداع وسفر الشر

    خوفا أن لا يصح الرياء

    He recited his verse of deception and evil

    Fearing pretense would not prevail

  15. وانبرى داخلا وقد مضه السير

    وهاجت فؤاده البأساء

    He strode right in, the walk exhilarated him

    Troubles stirred his heart

  16. فتبدى له فتى ساهر الطرف

    على وجهه يلوح الذكاء

    A youth appeared awake and alert

    Intelligence shone on his face

  17. شاعر راقه سكون رجاه

    ولعمري تهدي الدجى الشعراء

    A poet, calmness pleased him

    Poets soothe the darkness, I swear

  18. روعته فورا تحية إبليس

    ولما رآه زاد البلاء

    Iblis was startled by his presence

    Seeing him made matters worse

  19. غير أن الشيطان قال بلطف

    خفف الضيم إننا أصدقاء

    But Satan gently said

    "Relieve the hurt, we're friends"

  20. اسمعتني الأيام عنك حديثا

    وحديث الأيام عنك الثناء

    "I've heard talk of you for days

    And days speak well of you

  21. ما ترى أنت كاتب هات فأسمعني

    فكلي يا صاحبي إصغاء

    Won't you, writer, let me hear

    My friend, lend me your ear"

  22. كلمات خف البلاء عن الشاعر

    فيها وزال عنه العناء

    The poet's words relieved his worries

    Ended his distress

  23. قال أحببت غادة لم ينلني

    قط منها إلا النوى والجفاء

    "I loved Gada but she only gave me

    Rejection and disdain

  24. كلما احتلت لاكتساب رضاها

    كان منها الصدود والبغضاء

    Whenever I tried to win her favor

    She was hostile and hateful"

  25. نشر الطرس والذي كان مكتوبا

    به هذي الأسطر الغراء

    He unrolled the parchment written

    With these elegant lines

  26. لك تجثو الكواكب الزهراء

    ولهذا البها يدين البهاء

    "For you the stars bow

    And beauty is in your debt

  27. جل من قد يراك للحسن معنى

    حين معنى الإنسان طين وماء

    Sublime is one who sees you as the essence of beauty

    When man's essence is but dust and water"

  28. أيها الناس هذه آية الله

    على الأرض أرسلتها السماء

    "O people, this is God's sign

    Sent down from the heavens"

  29. فاعبدوها وقدسوها احتراما

    ودعوا ما تقوله الأنبياء

    "Revere and sanctify her out of respect

    And forget what the prophets say"

  30. صورت مثلما تشاء كأن الحسن

    فيها مجسم والسناء

    "She is shaped as you please, as if beauty

    In her is incarnate, perfection manifest"

  31. فتنة للعباد تسترق القلب

    كما تسرق النهى الصهباء

    "A temptation for mortals, stealing hearts

    Like a gazelle stealing an Ohio buck"

  32. قد دعاها ليلى أبوها أأعمى

    كان حتى ما راعه ذا الضياء

    "Her father called her Layla, was he blind

    That he didn't see this light?"

  33. هي حسناء لا كما قال شوقي

    خدعوها بقولهم حسناء

    "She's a beauty, not as Shauqi said

    They fooled him by calling her beauty"

  34. يتمشى غرامها في عروقي

    فحياتي غرامها والدماء

    "My passion for her flows in my veins

    So my life is passion and blood"

  35. قلم الحسن خط في وجنتيها

    ما لبدء الغرام فينا انتهاء

    "The pen of beauty has drawn on her cheeks

    No end to when passion began in us"

  36. عند هذا الشيطان قام ينادي

    وجميع البلاد عم النداء

    At this, Satan cried out

    And the call echoed through all lands

  37. أنا إبليس فاشهدوا أيها الناس

    بأني من الخداع براء

    "I am Iblis, O people bear witness

    That I am done with deceit"

  38. شعراء الزمان أكثر مكرا

    من شياطينه وليس مراء

    "Poets of this age are more cunning

    Than its devils, no doubt"

  39. لا تعوذوا من شر إبليس باسم

    الله يا قوم إن ذاك خطاء

    "Do not seek refuge from Satan's evil in God's name

    O people, that is wrong"

  40. إن تعوذوا فباسم إبليس واسم

    الله مما تقوله الشعراء

    "If you seek refuge, do so in Iblis' name, and God's name

    Is what these poets say"
