1. سألتُ له اللهَ أن يهدأَ

    فقد تعب العقدُ مِمّا رأى

    I asked God to calm him

    For the necklace was tired of what it saw

  2. رفيقٌ لخصركِ ما ينثني

    وكم قصَّرَ العِقدُ، كم أبطأ

    A companion to your waist that does not bend

    How little the necklace lasted, how slow it was

  3. أطال على الصدر تعريجَه

    ودار بكنزين قد خُبِّئا

    It lingered on the chest with its twisting

    And wandered with two buried treasures

  4. وراح، وجاءَ فلمّا اهتدى

    تَدلّى ولكنّه ألجأ

    It went and came, when it found its way

    It dangled but it insisted

  5. فيا سِتِّ عفواً، فإن الذي

    تعلّقَ بالصدر ما أخطأ

    So sorry ma’am, for what

    Clung to the chest did not err

  6. على ربوتَيْ لذّةٍ، واشتهاءٍ

    أطال الإقامةَ، واستمرأ

    On the hills of pleasure and desire

    It prolonged the stay, and took its ease

  7. وعبَّ من الأَرَج العنبريِّ

    مَخافةَ في العمر أن يظمأ

    And it feared in life to thirst

    For the amber flowing from the vine

  8. وشارفَ عند سقيطِ القميصِ

    نعيمَ العيونِ الذي لألأ

    And it came close by the hem of the shirt

    To the bliss of eyes that glittered
