Have Daʿd’s weather-worn ruins stirred your longing—
her dwellings deserted, like the hem of a mantle?
Though she said, on the evening I visited her,
“May you be bereft! Has this man’s good sense not grown since parting from me?
Are you not an old man, already bridled by a beard,
and thus restrained from the folly of beardless youths?”
Yet I—as you well know—surely safeguard my piety,
and give away my ancestral wealth to earn praise.
